CHURCH OF ENGLAND, CLYDE.
A meeting of the Congregation was held in the Church on Wednesday evening last, . when about twenty gentlemen attended. | Mr. J. U. Cambridge, who was voted to the chair, said a telegram had been received by the Secretary of the Church Committee, i Mr. Barlow, to the effect that the Rev. Joshua Jones, the gentleman recommended by the Bishop of the Diocese, would arrive in Clyde on Thursday. The' present meeting was convened for the purpose of initiat- 1 ing measures for maintaining the reverend | gcullcman in the district. He called upon | Mr. A. Christophers to explain what had already been done. Mr. Christophers said: Some time since steps were taken to ascertain what amount of money could be raised in the district in support of a clergyman, when a sum suf- ; ficicnt was promised, and correspondence ! entered into to obtain a minister, resulting in the appointment of the Rev. J. Jones to the cure. Before actual business was com- | menccd be would propose, That the Coni grcgation are highly pleased at the appointment of a Minister and at his arrival, and that arrangements be made to receive him. Seconded by Mr, Newell, and carried. Messrs. Christophers and Hazlett were appointed to receive the Reverend gentleman, and make arrangements for his residence. Mr. H:\zlctt said, no one was more grati- , fiod than himself that a clergyman had been appointed and had arrived, that a resident clergyman was an absolute want w»s no question, and every exertion must be used to keep him in the district The ability of i raisidg the stipend had bi«n questioned, he ( had no doubt on that head. The matter must be taken in hand with determination, ; and a far different result would lie effected , than was anticipated. —He would propose, That Messrs. Christophers and W. W. Wilson be appointed collectors. Seconded by Mr. Marshall anil carried. In reply to a question by Mr. W. W. Wilson, the Chairman said the guaranteed stipend was 25U/. with residence, or 30U/. without j Mr. Fache said previous to seeking subscriptions it would be advisable to fix the , pew rent, as the one would in a number of . instances affect the other, he said he Lad heard the question mooted by members of the congregation, and he mentioned it to i obtain an expression of opinion. After dismission it was decided that 1 present subscriptions raised should bo devoted to the stipend and the matter of pew \ rents be left for after consideration. Resolved, That the Secretary, M. R. Barlow, be instructed to write to the Black’s 1 Charch Committee, intimating the appointment of the Rev. Joshua Jones to the cure i of the Dunstan District, and of his arrival, ] and asking of them to take steps towards ' raising the stipend fund.'. .Conversation ■ relative to the visits of the Rev. Mr. Beck i ensued, after which it was resolved, that 1 Messrs. IngS and Christophers • make arrangements for the discontinuance.
