CLYDE TOWN COUNCIL.
The usual monthly meeting was held in the Town Hall on Wednesday last. Present : James Hazlett, Esi]., Mayor, in the chair, and Councillors Clark, Weisford, Patterson, Brough and Naylor. The minutes of tho last meeting were read and confirmed. The outward correspondence was read'and approved, and the inward received. Proposed by Councillor Brough, seconded by Councillor Patterson, Tnat the letter written by Mr. Christophers, on behalf of the School Committee be acknowledged, and that the Town Clerk be instructed to ascertain from the Library Committee whether they intend to continue iu occupation of the building at present used by them. Carried. Accounts to the amount of 22 1. 13s. Cd. were passed for payment. On the motion of Councillor Patterson seconded by Councillor Weisford, That Messrs. Thomas Stanbrook and A. Oliver be appointed valuators. Tenders for the purchase of ten shy-lights as follows were opened.—William Grihdley, 15s. each ij William Auckland, Bs. The Chinese, ex Guiding Star, have been landed, the Board of Joalth having no authority to detain the*essel as no infectious disease existed. There is much dissatisfaction that she was not left in quarantine. The Southern Escort arrived with 3236 ounces of gold. The first sod of theTimaru Railway was turned .yesterday. Allan and Stumblets were the successful tenderers for Port Chalmers. Mr. Creighton introduced the Permissive Bill. Mr. Murray, amidst laughter, gave notice of his intention to move for a new Constitution. Mr. Wood moved that the next Session of the Assembly be held in Dunedin. A considerable amount of opposition is expected to tbe proposed timber and cereal duties. Mr. Reeves asked if the Government intended to institute any inquiry as to the sale of fifty thousand acres of land to Mr. Clarke, with a view of ascertaining if the Waste Lands Board had not exceeded their powers, and take the necessary steps to declare the transaction void. Mr. Gisborne said that the Government hsd asked for a full statement of facts, upon which future action depended. Mr. Void expressed an opinion adverse to the establishment of a Colonial Mint. At the last evening’s sitting the Educational Bill was taken into Committee. The fith section passed with the addition that clergymen should be disqualified as Inspectors. The Bill is likely to be withdrawn. The House then went into Committee of Ways and Means. Messrs. Stafford, Gillies, and Wood objected, as no opportunity would be afforded for a general discussion of finance. Mr. Vogel said that if the Opposition had any objections to urge, tbe proper way was for them to raise a distinct question. The increased Stamp Duties would realise 17’000/, and it any new duties are rejected, the Government would make up the deficiency by making the maximum license of a Joint Stock Company, 100/., instead of 55’. The Duty upon Bank cheques increased two-pence. Mr. Gisborne introduced a Bill for au extension of the franchise, to persons in the receipt of 1000/. a year, salary lor six months prior to registration ; persons paying 40/. lodging, with six months residence ; and all persons rated for Municipal Highway purposes. At Invercargill a public meeting carried a resolution to the effect that the position of the Colony in reference to ihe Public Works and Immigration Act demands that discouragement should be given to tbe emigration of Chinese, and encouragement to Europeans.
