OPHIR

(FROM OUE COEBESPONDENT.) September 19. At last we have a Resident Magistrate and Warden amongst us, but whether the appointment is to be permanent it is not yet known. The wise men, the elect of the people know only these things. On Tuesday last the 12th instant, Mr. Carew held his first Court and disposed of a vast amount of business, the accumulation of months, to the evident satisfaction of all parties interested. All join in the wish that he may remain in charge of the district. The Ball held here on the 15th instant for the benefit of the School funds was a success, and I think it not out of place here to say that great credit is due to the committee, and that they are deserving of support in the good cause. The question is often asked, what is intended to be done in regard to the township is the present survey to be sold or not? It is most decidedly a crying shame that after so much expense neither the people or the revenue should be benefitted. A move has again been made to brind up a new sludge channel. A committee for the purpose was appointed a short time since, but up to the present nothing has been done, may be, this new committee are waiting for the old one to report as to what they did during their term of office, and to account for the money expended. When the new committee was appointed a considerable sum, some 30/. odd I believe was to the credit of the old committee in the Bank, now what has been done with this sum, neither the outside public or your correspondent knoweth ought, but would very much like to, aud 1 conclude it would only be just that we should he satisfied on that point, before we are called upon to farther subsciibe. Mining at Black’s No. 1 is much about the same as it has been for years past, the few who are engaged succeed in obtaining sufficient of the precious metal to cover current expenses, and to put a little by for a rainy day. At No. 3, things are more active and bustling, and the hopes of the shareholders are in the ascendant. The L)eep Lead Company, Registered, have I am happy to say again struck the lead equally as good as before, and are getting out some first rate dirt. Without casting any reflections, it was rather strange the lead was ever lost, but as it has again been struck it is all right—the lode took a dip perfectly perpendicular, and was passed over—it was at last discovered by sinking, the gold follows the main rock bottom. The Try Again Company, Registered, are still sinking, and expect to strike the bottom shortly. From German Hill there is notlrng lo report save, that the limited population are all busily engaged and to all appearance doing well, there be'ng plenty of water, all the races are full.
