BENDIGO.
(from a correspondent). The local representatives of the Colelongh Quartz Reef Company, Registered, are down in the mouth, the huge castle they have lately been hail :ing, has been unceremoniously knocked about their oai s to their great and evident discomfort. The howl of anger and disappointment from the big city has not as ye' found vent. When the plain troth was laid bare up here, the effect was bewildering ; in Dunedin it must have been stmiiiin/, ergo, perhaps their silence. Your rea :ers will naturally say what s the matter, well, the fact is, the ( olelough Cora pany have been expecting a very handsome yield from their last crushing from four to six ounces to the on was spoken of but on cleaning up the other day, the result was about fifty five ounces out of one hundred and twenty tons, or rather less than half an ounce to the ton. Carelessness, or perhaps Something more venal is Assigned but. before an opinion is ventured on, another crushin • of the same description of stone, hut under the strictest supervision, is to take place, the remit of this is anxiously looked for, and I will lose no time in acquainting you with it. The Alta Company commenced operations for the season during the week. I hear that water is scarce with them, but the fiist fall of snow or tain will gi e them plenty. The Aurora Triiiu’ers are still busy pushing forward the water on the terraces and gullies to the north of Bendigo Gully. A great deal of gold has been got wherever sought for in this locality, and I hope Hazlett and party will during the summer do well. Douglas and party have directed the Rise and Shine water on the same line of terraces, and have set into work immediately under the range, this ground has been tried before without satisfactory results I hope they may do well, but I am afraid until they get more into the flat, they will not make a pile. The Cromwell Company are busy raising stone and crushing at their own mih, the last crushing was from the Gol-len Link with fair results, it has i esn mooted to crush the stone from this claim at the Aurora battery, hut whether terms can be come to, if- is dilßcult to say. I r . is a pity to see a most ex celleut battery, such as the Aurora, lying idle, the adv -nta:e would be mu ual, and it would give a hotter appearance. The alluvial workings, excepting die Rise and Shine, ave very slack, a few parties are making small wages, hut nothing further.
