NEVIS.
(FROM OUTI CORRESPONDENT,) The largest nugget of gold r fla yet discovered in the P- o vince of Otago was brought to light on Saturday last by James M‘Donald and. party in their claim about four iiiiles above the township. The ground has only lately been take n up, and the party in constructing their tail race, and just where they first struck the bottom, turned up tins fine lump of gold, together wi.h A smaller piece weighing about five p nnyweights The discovery lias created quite an excitement, and a rush on a small scale has set in to the locality. The ground for years past has been looked upon as being good, and the eagerness with which adjoining claims were taken np, and the spirited way work was commenced, quite refreshed one, and vividly brought to mind the an ivity of former years. All arc expectant, and on a future occasion I hope to chronicle that the expectations of the most sanguine have been more than realized. * Every class of mining on the Nevis, (the only branch of in lust y as yet introduced) for the past two' months has been through ! the unusual severity of the winter, at a stand still, but as king frost anl the snow | ar< ‘ now disappearing, the miners are c-x---j hibiting signs of activity and settmg into work. As the prospect# of nearly-allure considered good, a season of prosperity is prognosticate!. I had almost omitted to mention that it is proposed to augment the funds of the Dunstau Hospital by disposing of the nugget on die Art Union p-inoiplo, that is, by handing over the amount raised above its actual value. Now as we have not a settled population here sufficient to cirry out such, an idea, I should like to know whether you think it practicable. lam at lib Tty tosav that Messrs. > cal ley and Starkey, in whose hands the nug.-eb is, will be most happy to receive suggestions on the subject.
