ALEXANDRA.

(from our correspondent. ) A public meeting to diacuss the question of two heads of water being allowed to run down the creek, was held at Mason’s Royal Mail Hotel, on Saturday evening last. About forty miners were in attendance, Mr. Theyers occupied the chair, and explained the object of the meeting. Before the business was entered on, it was stated that an advertisement, convening the meeting, was handed to the Dunstan Times, but it had not appeared, which circumstance the speaker said had a suspicious appearance, he would not say the proprietor purposely omitted its insertion with the viev of making it appear the meeting was a hole and corner one, but hesaid it looked suspicious. Others harped on the same string from which no light was thrown on the matter wh*n the subject dropped.

A number of resolutions were proposed and carried, the substance of them were to the following effect—That the meeting' views with alarm the recommendation of the Mining Conference to repeal the existing right, whereby two sluice hea Is of water are allowed to flow down all creeks for general use, as by such, many miners throughout the Province, who had expended large sums of money in Creek and Gulley workings, would bo ruined. That by repealing the existing law, the whole of the water would become private- property, and that the present law in regard to wafer rights gives equal justice to all, and that the prc. posed change is uncalled for. A committee was afterwards elecrcd to embody the resolutions in a memorial, and send the same to the’Government. i

In. the Warden’s Courf, on Monday last, a case touching somewhat on the same point was heard and decided in favor of the race owner, but as in this case, the Creek workers sought to divert the water, the deeision was favorably received by all. The particulars of the Other cases disposed of and applioa-ions made, I will not aurfeii you with. Regarding the Court, I may say that things are now worked with a system Confusion has vanished, and every one appears to be more satisfied than/fOrmerly. I "heard lately that'* Mi;. Adajna, fu’l

fle'ged as a Commissioner or Arbitrator Visited hero, but for what purpose, what he, did, where he went, or what he saw, I am completely in the d irk. If hebanjo up on Government business it must hare' been as a spy, as he made his presence known to none, and as far as I can hear, asked no questions. Perhaps he had heard of the wonderful riches of the modem paqtolus, and was sentijby the 'Government with the view of investing some of Goldfields Loan in a dredge, had he fallen in with me I would have laid him on, but pe haps he was shy, The fevere Irosts of, late have had the effect of a stop to all kind of mining, with the exception of dredging, and some of them are doing remarkably well, others a mere nothing. Municipal affairs are quiet, ihe thermometer in the Council Chamber the Jlast day 1 was in was far below freezing, that accounts for the quietness. Humor with her many tongues is silent, so I cannot enlighten you ; as to who aspires to wear the-honor of either Mayor or Councillors [Ed. D.hT. The omission of the advertisement alluded to, was an omission and nothing more, and we beg to apologise. The columns of the Dumtan Times are .at all times open for the opinions of an individual or a body, and we shall he most happy in a : future issue to insert a full report •of the meeting held on Saturday] evening’ last, or of any other meeting held at Alexandra or elsewhere.]
