PROVINCIAL COUNCIL.
Thursday, May 26. The Provincial Council met at noon. After the usqial formalities had bem gone through, the Clerk called upon the Qouncil to elect ■’ Speaker. Mr. W. H. Reynolds was proposed by M . Car ill, tho nomination being sec nded by Mr. Turnbull. Mr. Reid proposed Mr. J. L. Gillies. Mr. Bastings seconded Mr. Reid’s proposit on. After a debate, He motion tha Mr. Reynolds do ake the Chair was put, and decided lost on ih voices. A division was calle for, resulting in aies, 12; and noes, 14. The motion that Mr. Gillies 0 take the Chair wa- then put anJ' carried without a dissentient voice. The Sup- rintendent having c onfirmed the election, Mr. Gillies took the Chair. His Honor the Superintendent delivered an add ess, a precis of w ii hj, received by telegraph was published in "Ur last issue. Friday, May 16. Mr. Haughtonlaid on the table resolutions passed at a meetin of the unemployed, to the effect that there was a great deal of distress existing in Dunedin and the outlying districts ; that it* is desirable that immigiit in should be at ore: stopped, and a Commission appointed to inquire into the condition of the working classes ; and that the Superintendent should immediately start public woi’ks, for the purpose of giving employment to the unemployed, “ which it is to be hoped may arrest the storm which is looming over-head, and may at any time burst in thunder.” Mr Cargill explained the circumstanceun er which he an his colleagues took office stating that they did so to help he Superintendent out of what appeared to be a serious difficulty, as he late Executive had resigned through the decision of the Province on the Superinten 'ental election.
