ALEXANDRA.
(from our correspondent.) For reasons which, to use an auctioneer’s pet phrase, are “too numerous to mention,” my contribution to the hebdomadal literature ot the nineteenth -century will, on this occasion, be short nnd sweet, “like a donkey’s gallop ” This elegant simile was suggested to mo by seeing one of those noble quadrupeds going through the main street of Alexandra with a large nurate of small children upon his back •And thereto Thedonkey in question has proved an apple of discord. it appears that, on seeing ■“ noddy,” a well- > nown Clyde boniface was seized with the laudable ambition ■of possessing the noble animal. Synchronously with this notion striking this gentleman a web-known Alexandra resident conceived the idea that the moral and intel'eetual welfare of the children of A exandra ivould be promoted by the town put chasing the neddy. The Alexandra man is reputed to be constitutionally energetic, and •on this occasion proved himself to be so, for he carried his idea into effect With marvellous rapidity. He co lected money enough to buythi donkey iu a metaphorical “ brace of shakes,” and handed over the “ spondulix” to its proprietor, receiving from that individual a receipt and the coveted animal, i lie Clyde boniface, however, considered that having given a crown as deposit, Neddy was his, and attempted to take forcible possession of it. But the fates were unpropitious, and his evil fortune, in the shape of a dispenser of spirituous and fermented liquors, not unknown in this district, gave a striking proof of his sentiments somewhere between the visua organs •of the Clyde claimant. The majesty of the law was ca led into effect the following morning, and he appeared on the scene on horseback, with what result I know not; but the distinguished •stranger whose presence we so much covet resideth at Clyde 0 tempora ! «0 mores ! A sad accident occurred on Tuesday night last. George, the son of Mr ’Cameron, of the Caledonian Hotel, had been watering the donkey purchased by the townspeople, and, on •returning, was thrown on his head. The unfortunate lad s’-skull was fractured, and he is now in a very pre•canous condition. In mining there is nothing stii-ing. The on y Miing new I have to report is that the Ovens Company are sinking for the main bottom on the Mariti•herikia Company’s old ground, with ■every prospect of sin cess.
