Duncan 545. Birch, 541. Mason, 478. Waihola poll:—Mollison, 7G. Dyer 32. Oamaru country :—"Webster, 41. Hutcheson, 36. Daniel beat M'Gillivray at Riverton by six votes. Mr. Strode refused to proceed with the case against Mr. Lemon on the grounds stated in preliminary hearing Mr Gishorne has accepted Brunton's offer for a reconnaisance survey of si line of railway from Mataura to Balcluthn. Major Richardson was thrown from his carriage yesterday, and stistained a severe scalp wound. Work commenced on the Clutha Railway The Governor turns the first sod to morrow. He leaves town on Monday.
Tho poll for the election of a member rt the Provincial Council for the Kawarau constituency will take place on Tuesday, the 28th inst. Contrary to general expectation the number of nominations was limited to three, viz., Mr. John Marsh, Mr. Christopher Hickie, and Mr. John Hu ghes. The Returning Officer declined to receive the nomination of Mr. Carnaby—a long previously announced candidate as he did not possess the necessary qualification. Mr. Daniel Moore, another intended candidate, did not put in an appearance until too late. The three candidates nominatod representing three different classes the contest will probably bo very keer, but the probability'is that the miners will return their man.
