ARROWTOWN.

On Monday last, the 13th instant, a public dinner was given by the inhabitants of Arrowtown, to Mr. H. Holmden, agent of the Bank of New Zealand, who is leaving this place for Dunedin. The affair came off at Garroway’s Royal Oak Hotel, where about forty gentlemen, consisting of the leading inhabitants and a goodly sprinkling of miners, sat down to a most handsomerepas\ Mr. J. M'Ardel occupied the chair ah,d Mr. Healey officiated aft croupier. After one of the most magnificent spreads ever laid upon a table nr the district had been done ample justice to, and the usual loyal toasts drunk, the chairman, in a highly appropriate speech, proposed theguest ofthe evening, and expressing the regret which every one . felt at losing one who had always given so much assistance in public affairs as well as rendered himself a most agreeable companion. Mr. Healey proposed the mining interest, which was responded to by Mr. Miller. Mr. Innes proposedtheagriculturalinterest.Messrs A. Douglas and J. M'Ardol responded. Mr. Cope proposed the Banking and Commercial. Responded to by Messrs. Bodborough and Pritchard. Mr. Innes toasted the ladies, which was ably responded to by Messrs Dugird and Rcdborough. Mr. Cope gave
the industrial intei-est of the district not referred to, believing that each
sphere of labor performed a part indispensable to the whole community _ Messrs. Perrelle, Savage and Campbel responded. Mr, Healey proposed tlio Press, The toast was ably seconded by Mr, Tunes, who hoped that the time would not be long before a newspaperwas published at Arrowtown. Mr. Cope responded. Mr. Healey, in his capacity as croupier, then proposed the Host and Hostess, highly complimenting them upon the great success which had attended their efforts in preparing so handsome a feast, Mr. Garroway made a suitable reply, and this ended the formal part of one of the most pleasant evening's entertainment ever spent at Arrowtown
