No further aspirants for tho honor of representing the Dunstan district in tho Provincial Council have announced themselves since our last issue. The candidates in the field are Messrs Shepheyd, Niven and Worth. The nomination is fixed for Tuesday next the 14th instant.

A public meeting, for the purpose of considering the best means to secure the opening of land for agricultural settlement, convened by the Mayor, in accordance with a requisition signed by a number of the residents of Clyde, was held last evening, at Hawthorne's Clyde Hotel. Notwithstanding the very short notice given there was a very good attendance. The Mayor (Mr. Hazlett) occupied the chair. We regret that the lateness of the hour at which the meeting closed prevents our giving more than the resolutions passed, which were as follows : —“ That this mooting is of opinion that the time has now arrived when the opening up of land for agricultural settlement can no longer be delayed without producing results most disastrous to the prosperity of the Dunstan district.” “ That this meeting records its most emphatic protest against the lessees of Mon tori Station being allowed to take up the agricultural Base they have applied for, as should it be granted a great portion of the land in its vicinity will be rendered unavailable for settlement, and jdedges itself to assist, by every means in its power, those who have applied for agricultural leases affected thereby, in lodging an objectiouin the Warden’s Court, against Messrs M‘Laron, Greig and Co. obtaining the lease they have applied for.” “ That a Committee consisting of Messrs Hazlett, Facile, Hastie and Patterson be appointed to take steps to lodge an objection in the Warden’s Court against the granting of the lease applied for by Messrs Messrs M'Laren, Greig and Co., and to draw up a petition to the Government in the matter.” “That a copy of the first two resolutions be forwarded to the Provincial Government. ’’ A congregational meeting of the members of the Church of England is convened for Sunday afternoon in xt in the Church, for the purpose of considering the advisability of securing a clergyman for the Dunstan District. The Honorary Secretary of the Church has received a letter from the Rev. S. D. Green, of Akaroa, a clergyman recommended by the Rev. S. T. Nevill (the Bishop elect of Dunedin), which, if satisfactorilyanswered, will lead to Mr. Green’s visiting the district, with a view of permanently settling therein. The Rev. Samuel T. Nevill, of Magdalen College, Cambridge, and Rector of Shelton, Staffordshire, has been elected by the Diocesan Synod Bishop of Dunedin. The reverend gentlemen arrived in Clyde on Tuesday evening last, and left the next morning en route to Dunedin. A Sanitary Committee has been formed in Invercargill. The principal object it was created for is to prevent the spread of scarlet fever. The lunatics in Victoria cost the Government of that Colony £IIO,OOO per armim, A man named Larando Jones for blaspheming in a public place at Sydney, has been sentenced to two years imprisonment and tiued £IOO. The slave trade is reported to be flourish - ingtbe South Seas. The following unique advertisement appeared in the “Otago Daily Times”:--Wanted, Parties Relieving Eternal DanniaItiontobe Un-Scriptural, Uu-Godlike, to form Society. At Switzer’s, the scarlet fever introduced by thejllobert Henderson seems to be sp e ding. One case has terminated fatally, and several other cases arc reported Ry reference to our advertising colums it will he seen that a much felt want has been supplied hjy r Mr. G. W. Brownof Alexandra, who has started running an express cairyin" passengers and parcels daily, between Clyde and Alexandra.

Late advices from Levuk.a are to tho effect that lawlessness is spreading in the Fiji Island. Tenders forsupplyingthe Dunstan distaict Hospital with groceries, &c., for the en. suing quarter will be received by the Sccrelm*y» Hr, Barlow, till 1 o’clock on Monday next.

We again remind those desirous of having their names placed on the Electoral Roll that the time for registration is drawing to a close. The 31st of March is the last day on which applications to register can be sent in. Forma may be obtained at tho office of this paper. The contemplated contest between the

rieketers of theDunstan and Lakes district will not'Cinue of owing to the lateness of the season. Wo hope, however, now that the ice may he said be broken that next year will bo inaugurated a series of matches between onr local cricketers and those of our Wakatip neighborsWe direct the attention of blacksmiths, wheelwrights, or those in search of a desirable investment to the sale by auction on Thursday next, the 16th instant, at Cromwell by Air. W. J. Barry, of the well known blacksmith’s shop in Melmore-street, Cromwell, (now in the occupation of Mr. Lindsay), dwelling house, sections of land, &c. Full particulars will be found in our advertising columns.

An agreeable change in the weather, and one that will be hailed with satisfaction by the majority of miners and agriculturists occurred on Monday last, when refreshing rain descended noarly all day. This downpour was much needed, as some racehalders had been compelled to suspend operations entirely, while many others had their supply of the fluid reduced to the minimum operations could be carried on with. The quartz mining companies also experienced groat inconvenience from the scarcity of water. Now however, all requiring water have plenty of it, and as a consequence sluicing and quartz crushing operations are being] vigorously proceeded with.

Since our last issue Mr. W. J. Barry, auctioneer, Cromwell, has announced his intention d£ contesting the seat in the Provincial Council for the Kawarau district. There are two-other candidates, viz. -MessrsCarnaby and Hughes. The nomination will take place outlie 15thinstant.

At a meeting of the Town Council of Clyde, held on Wednesday night, Mr. Kerr was appointed Town Clerk, vice Mr. C. P. Johnson resigned.

Nino candidates for the representation of Mount Ida in the Provincial Council are in the field. The Hon. E. W. Stafford addressed his constituents at Timaru on the evening of Monday, March 1. He criticised the actions of the Ministry, and drew a rather unfavorable picture of the state of affairs in New Zealand.

His Excellency the Governor left Invercargill to go overland to Dunedin, on Tuesday morning last. The Grand Jury threw out the indictments against John Russell for obtaining money and goods under false pretences, at. Clyde, and Charles Hair, for perjury, at Cromwell. The Ida Valley Deep Lead Company continue puddling washdirt with an aver* a"e daily result of about twenty four ounces. A large quantity of new timber lias aarived on the ground, and work is being vigorously carried on. The state of the roads in the Dunstau district generally, is by no means creditable to the Provincial Government, but between Clyde and Black’s there are places in a scandalous state of neglect. About a couple of hundred yards 'from Chatto Creek the roadway has been washed away to an extent which renders it unsafe to travel on even by those well acquainted with it, and unless something in the way of repairs is undertaken very shortly there is every likelihood of serious, if not fatal accidents oceuring. Rear the place in question ,yery recently a gentleman driving a pair horse buggy narrowly escaped through his horses shying and nearly falling bown the precipice formed by the action of the water on the side of the road ; and only last week a man driving a horse and dray nearly lost bis life through the same cause. As it was a chaffcutting machine which was on the dray at the .time of the accident received damage to the extent of £SO, besides causing great inconvenience and loss to its owner. At Tiger Hill, nothing has been done to the road since last winter, with the exception of a little dust Icing placed in the ruts by a Government Stroke gentleman, which will render the road worse than before. Something must be done very shortly, or this road will be impassable during the coming winter. If the Government would only say whether they intend to keep the road in repair or not, the people in the district would know what to do. If they intend to let the road remain in its present disgraceful condition those affected would very shortly raise a subscription to keep the road at least passable. From the Thames we learn that the Caledonian Claims crushing for the week j ending 3rd of March yielded ton thousand j ounens. | We remind our readers that the Black’s I Annual Races will take place cm the Blacks | No. 1 course on the day dedicated to the ] patron saint of Ireland, Friday next the 17 th i instant. Lovers of the turf we are sure I will find a first rate day’s sport, while those who may visit the course merely for an ‘outing* will not have an occasion to repent having done so. The programme, which will be found in our advertising columns, contains attractions which will bring together many local “ cracks ” and good fields and close contests maybe anticipated. The refreshment booth will be under the care of Air. MMntosli of the Black’s Hotel No. 1. On the day following Black's races, there will be a number of hack races athletic sports, &c. The application made in the Supremo Court for a rule to stop the proceedings against Mr. Barton in the Resident Magistrate’s Court was not entertained by the Judge, and case therefore goes on. Mr. (iisWirne in his evidence stated that he had received from the manager of the telegraph, a copy of the telegraph summary of the speech delivered at Camara by Mr, Stafford compiled by the reporters of the “ Otago Daily Times”. Mr. Barton thereupon instituted criminal proceedsngs against Mr. Lemon for contravention of the Electric Telegraph Act. It may not be generally known that newspapers addressed to Athenaniiiis, Mechanics Institutes, Hospitals, Public Libra-, ries and Lunatic Asylums, are permitted to pass through the post office, free of charge. 1 Cobb and Co’s stables at the rear of the Dunstau Hotel narrowly escaped destruction from fire last week through the pranks of some children, who lighted a fire at the back of the building. Had not Mr. lies observed the fire before it took any serious hold on the stables, there is not the slightest doubt that they would have been consumed. It is to bo hoped that the parents of the children who lighted the fire, inflicted some salutary punishment upon them.

From Bendigo Gully the news to hand is a little more cheering. The recent rainfall has given plenty of water for all the mills and crushing operations are being orous'y proceeded with. The Cromwc W Company are crashing stone with excellent prospects. This company, during the week crushed a small parcel from the reef recently discovered in Thompson’s Gorge which yielded oneounee eleven pennyweights to the ton. Colclough’s will clean up this week. The tables look as it there will be a goodly amount of the precious metal—two ouhcea to.the ton is anticipated. The Alta' Company have got their ten heads to work and from all appearance the result of their crushings will be satisfactory. Horrigau and party on Colclough’s line have raised about thirty tons and intend having it put through the machine at once.

We understand that Mr. S. C. Worth a candidate for the representation of the Dunstan district in the Provincial Council, will address the electors of Clyde and Alexandra shortly.

Tho Dunedin races will take place on the 23rd and 24th instant. Tho work of bringing the Mauuberikia Race to its destination at Mutton Town Point is being rapidly pushed forward by its proprietors, and will probably be completed in the course of a week. The members of the Company are shifting up their houses, and when all have done so there will be quite a village near the scene of their operations. Mr. Patterson is actively pushing forward his preparations for making bricks, and in the course of a very few weeks expects to have a large quantity on hand. DUNSTAN DISTRICT HOSPITAL. Mr. Holt stated that he was of opinion that the race as it was at present being cut would bo practically useless. A discussion ensued which resulted in it being decided that Mr;- Holt, in company with the Committee, should visit the race, hike"'steps to remedy the error (if anjV xvldch had been made in its •construction.
