ALEXANDRA.
(from our OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
Another uneventful week. N evertlieless I suppose unless I supply you with your hebdomadal quantum of
news you will present me with a receptacle like those in which unfaithful beauties of Constantinople are consigned to the dark blue waters of the Bosphorus. Some of my friends tell
me that when there is no news, it is far easier to write than when there is a multiplicity of “ incident.” It m c y he so, hut in my case, probably because my imaginative faculties were repressed in my youth with a view to prevent my acquiring too intimate a knowledge ofHer Majesty’s penological system, unless the people do or say something out of the run of our ordinary humdrum existence I cannot send yon anything. I am afraid to write about the weather, because if I do so, I will he told that if I can’t tind something better to fill my letter than that, I had better resign the eorrerpon dent’s quill into abler hands. I have reported for the last
four weeks that the river has been
lower at present-than it has been at, this season for years, consequently if I send you up that information your in telligent readers will consider it stale. The only consolation I have for the paucity of news is “ such is life.” A meeting of the shareholders of the Conroy’s Gully' quartz reef, was held last week, at which it was decided to send for machinery. The prospects obtained warrant the company in going to this outlay and if they continue as good as at present the splendid dividends of the Thames mav be rivalled.
The dredges continue on good pav■alde ground—both the Galatea and ■£the Kearsage doing remarkably ■well. 1 hear that a “collide ” has taken place between the owners of two dredges—viz. the Hartley and Beattie’s relative
to their respective claims. The Warden’s Court will probably decide the matter. I notice application has been made to the Warden to declare the ground
between the towns of Alexandra and
Clyde may be taken up in acre claims. The Manuherikia Race Company are actively pushing forward their race. It will probably be in, in the course of the next fortnight.
