ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE.
We do not identify ourselves with the opinions that may be\uxpreased by our correspondents. -• AN EXPLANATION. ~ • ' (To the Editor or the Dusstan Times.) Sir; —Your correspondent from Bendigo Gully, iu the issue of the 20th of January, announces the discovery of a new quartz reef here, and as impressions detrimental to me may arise from his report, 1 trust you will allow me,to give the truthful version Your correspondent - writes that the reef was found by me, while engaged ip cutting the Alta Water-race, Ac.,, and carefully covered up. The fact is, my mate .found a piece of surface stone, and when -shown to me’ 1 ju.lgcd from its appearancs that a reef was close at hand, but it never appeared in the excavation. A fortnight after, my mate sent for his brother, and tol l him to ] respect in the neighborhood. He did so, and found the reef. We then, long before our contract was completed, applie I for a prospecting claim Y Jilr c irres loudiut Inscribes a.mu stone he saw as showing a splendid lot of gold, 1 must confess he is- beforehand with me as I have examined all taken out up to date, and the color is rarely visible from the ferruginous nature of the quartz. That Mr. Retd crushed a good prospect is true in every respect, except, that the quantity in place of being two ounces was- two p muds, and the yiel I under, rather than over one pennyweight. With
regard to hie sympathetic hint about itigstion, if the parties in whom he Displays as strong an interest think they have any right to a share, they are welcome to try the point. They were partners of mine so far as the race contract was concerned but no further In conclusion I would recommend “ your own ” in future to ascertain the truth of what ho is about, to communicate, and not endeavor to by gross misV v A carefully report occasionally of our doings here wonkhdonbtless benefit the district, but to do this it would i e necessary for the reporter to visit. the localities described, and not to tollow the example of some of the war correspondents at home, whoso sensational accounts of battles lost and won often emanate from their own cosy firesides. ' , Apologising for trespassing so far on your space, I am, 4c., Geo. B.‘ Douglas, Logantown, Feb. 1, 1871.
