ALEXANDRA.
(from our own correspondent.)
For the past week electioneering has been the order of the day, and the chances of the several candidates fertile representation of the district in the General Assembly the only topic of conversation I can assure yon we are glad that the contest is over, and we all hope that Mr. Shepherd will he able to redeem his promises. ‘ Mr. Maeandrew paid us a visit on Saturday night. It was 11 o’clock before he arrived, nevertheless Ms meeting was largely attended. - Some person from Waitahuna, evidently employed for the purpose, endeavored to disturb tire meeting, but did not succeed in his object. Mr. Maeandrew spoke at some length, and answered a number of questions." A vote of confidence was proposed by Mr; Chappie, and seconded by Mr Evans. An amendment was moved by Mr. M'Gniness arid seconded by Air. Webb. On being put’ to the meeting, ' the amendment was lost, and the original motion carried by an overwhelming majority.
In mining matters there is nothing to report The dredges appear to be doing well, but what their returns are for this week I am unable to say. The Mamrherikia Race Company.are entcing their race towards Mutton-town Point, where they have obtained a lease of sixteen acres.
