BENDIGO GULLOY.

FROM OUR OWN CORIiESPONPENT. January 6. 1871. You must not look for any news from our quarter this week, as not being a prophet, I can only relate events which have occurred, and as the Capital of this district (Logan town) was nearly deserted last week, nothing of any consequence happened I was at home with about fourteen o’liers, and strange to say we were all musicians. The sporting community having cleared out, we took possession of the town and drank all the “ fiz ” we could find on this side of Cromwell. '

Work has again been started in all the claims that were under way before the holidays. The Cromwell (lompany has commenced on their new lease, and there is no less than six shafts going down- in three of which stone containing good gold has been struck. The reef is from one and a half to four feet thick. The deepest shaft on this lease is twenty feet/ *

Colelough’s Company hive not come up to time with the completion of their mill, but I hope to be able to report that it is under way short-1 v.

I learn that the new reef struck some days ago in the Alta Company’s ground is still looking well—being over six feet wide The race for conveying the water to the mill will be finished next week, and Mr. Reid, (the manager) expects to see the machine at work by the same time. Operations in the Aurora Reef are still suspended for what reason I do not know, hut I do know that it is a disgrace to the shareholders to allow such a splendid mill (o be idle.

A new reef was struck last week in Thompson’s Gorge, I hj ive not vi sited myself, but from what I can gather from those who have seen it, it appears to be but of very little account.

We had a visit from some new chums last week looking for work. -Tiiey say that the Dunedin papers state that any amount of work can be obtained at the Bendigo reefs Ihe very reverse is the case. There are some men here, who have been idle four or five months. I recommend T he Dunedin papers to refrain fiom further circulating leports that, labor is wanted here, and all who wish themselves well will stop awav.
