CROMWELL.
(from our own CORRESPONDENT. All the labor streams have now settled back into their regular courses from which they were temporarily diverted by the Christmas and New year festivities. T''e ‘good people who form the bone and sinew of Cromwell have had their fun, and are now—l have no doubt—working all the better for it. During the past week—but very few events of interest have occurred. We have been anxiously expecting good news from the Carrick ranges, but the “ good news ”has not come All we have is an intimation that the yield of gold from the “ Royal Standard ” is about two ounces to the ton ; which, Considering the great expectations we had from them, can hardly be called good news. At present the machine is crushing stonefroin die “ Elizabeth and it is expected that this will turn out veiy Well. Several Ivudles of electioneering papers have arrived in this town, but I fancy have not been largely read. At present, I think a large tn jority of the voters in Cromwell are supporters of Macandrew for the Supe tin tendency. Little is heard about the proposed members for the House of Representatives and Provincial Council. It is time that the gentlemen who desire the honor of representing this ’district in either house, (or rather I should say in the bouse or chamber) pul in an appearance, and enlighten us a little ns to their political opinions. We have had a short visit from the tj-ourlay’s All the town went to see them, and were I believe delighted with their entertainment. Strange it would be. if they were not. The ladies of Cromwell are making preparations for a bazaar, the funds resulting from which are to be devoted to the. very laudable purpose of improving the surroundings of the manse. It is time, indeed, that this was done for the manse at present does not suggest the ideas of comfort and tranquility, itc., that the abode of the pastor of a parish ought to do. It has no garden or fence round it and is •stuck down in the open plain, just like a digggers tent. It is to be hoped that the ladies of Clyde with their visual generosity, will give their assistance towards this praisworthy conspiracy for enticing the “ notes ” out ■of thtrpocke's of the gentlemen.
