ALEXANDRA.

(FROM OOTI OWN' CORRESPONDENT.) The excitement and bustle consequent upon the Christmas and New Year’s holidays having passed away, our township has relapsed into a state of quiescence, however as soon as the reaction has wiirked itself out, we expect to make a start again in the even tenor of our way. The weather has been intensely hot, and a fall of rain would he eagerly welcome*.* by both agriculturists and mi iers. Mining in tel licence there is none—the majority of the miners having just about recommenced work in right earnest. , The only things lively are politics, and they absorb all attention. The engagement in the firrhcomiug electioneering campaign to be fought in Alexandra will be a pretty severe one fertile candidates 1 fancy—not because opinions are greatly divided--but because those who aspire to the legislative honors will have to give a pretty good account of themselves, and the best man will get nearly all tl e votes. Mr. Mervyn, M.P.C. paid us a flying visit last Saturday, with the view of ascertaining how the Aloxandraitrsweredisposecltowardshim hut did not make a great impression. He stated that he intended to become a candidate far a seat in the Council. r. Niven’s chances of succes have been pretty freely canvassed ; but, until other candidates came forward, no pledges will be given. Mr Macandrew has opened the ball for the Superinteudental election. His Committee have sent up requests to his friends in the district to bestir themselves, but a feeling seems general among the electors to withholdjiledging themselves to either candidate until they have given their views and passed the questioning ordeal. For the Gen opal-Assembly nocandi- \ date has wooed our sweet v Dices, hut there is some talk of- getting up a 1 requisition to Mr. J. 0. Brown, of Tinipek-.i,hut nothing has yet been deme. ; By |Dp»t week it is probahfo soiao do- | cisive stop'will be taken, and, htitj] j then, Ivill bid you good l^e.
