ALEXANDRA.
F 0« OUR OWN COR ESPOJf EXT. Jest before 'Christmas in goldfields’ townships is generally the (Idlest period -of the year as far as business is concerned, ami Alexandra forms no exception to this rule. There is scarcely any thine; doing, but a goo 1 sign that t his is not to he a perm a eat state of affairs is the lac that .Mr, J. Hirers is recommencing business in his old premises. The weather during the last week has been squally, with occasional heavy showers of rain, which harp been eagerly welcem d hy agriciiltuiists. And the rain came just in time, for had it held olf for another week, nearly the whole of the crops would have been destroyed by the heat, as it is, the early crops have suffered, but those planted luts look exceedingly web.
A meeting of the School committee was held last week, during the course of the proceedings, it was stated that a number of books for prizes to the children were on their way up from Dunedin. The annual examination of the children attending the School will be held next Thursday, when the committee expect a good muster of the parents and friends to see the progress they have made. A man named James Go ullad, evidently insane, on Tuesday last jumped into the river from the dredge just below the township. Assistance was promptly rendered by the on lookers, and the would be suicide rescued. He was taken in charge by the police and .-e.' t to Clyde. The people here seem sanguine that a large number of the residents of the surrounding districts will come into witness their Christmas sports. The programme, one ofthe best- I have seen, contains a number of attractions to athletes and their admirers, and ought, in theatrical parlance, to *• draw ”
JBVom tlio Toviot, we have had large supplies of fruit—straw 1 (Tries, rasp--Ikm ides, nod gooseberries—which found ready sale at remunerative prices. My mining budget this week is very small ancle nitains very little information. The Manuheiikia Company I hear were not very successful in their recent prospecting on the ranges. No thing further in relation to Iverson’s reef at Conroy’s has come under my notice. The Alexandra Company intend to have another try at their reef in Butcher’s Cully They intend to place a wheel and pump on the ground at once, s - o as to thorough ! y test the value of their claims. The Ovens Company are plolding steadily •away at the old locality The recent rains ha\ing raised the river c >nsiderably, dredging operations have been for the present stopped There is nothing further that I kimv off, so I wll conclude by hoping for more uewa to till up my next epistle.
