In mining matters I have nothing very startling to report, the bank claims on the Molynenx arc still being worked preparing for next season. At Butcher’s Conroy’s, and Blackman’s, all the large tail races are at work, and several in tend to wash up at Christmas The claim known ; s the tunnel claim, at the lower end of Conroy’s Gully, is iu full work, and doing very well. There is some disagreement about water, hut the nature of it I do not know. Iversen and party’s Quartz Beef is iu close proximity to this claim. Since my last, the shareholders held a meeting to discuss the advisability of immediately erecting machinery; but, after due consideration, it was resolved that the reef or spur should be prospected to a depth of forty feet from the surface before incurring any expense further than making applications for water race and dam to work machinery. Since the imetiug tijeyarofollowing the reef down, and carrying payable gold with them All interested are sanguine of success, and hope ere long to see machinery units way to Conroy’s. The Mannherikia Company since suspending work at their paddock n -ar the coal ] >it, has been working one string of boxes on the Molynenx Tne remaining portion of the Company are openin'.; two claims on the terraces of the Mannherikia River, about a mile and a half above the township, but what tin ir prsspecta are I have not 1 ‘aimal. 'I he Ovens Company are in full work, and their race is full of water. In a former communication I inf.•riiied you that this company had made application for a mining lease of ten acres near the township. The deposit, t'2o, lining paid, and all other ie(s as laid down by the Regulations being complied with, the Warden sotted nothing further could bo done unfil a survey had been made, and as tlm otlkvor in change, of tho survey d«
partment of the district refused to do field work, nothing remained but to wait patiently the advent of a surveyor who wou'd do the work. The Government should see to this at once, and a tmd 10 the work of the mineis, or decline to take their money, A very sudfcessful public meeting was held on Friday evening last, when the getting up of a day’s sport during the Christmas Holidays was considered The greatest unanimity existed, and a most energetic committee was appointed to draw up the programme. A. s Ascription list was handed round the room, and a veiy handsome sum was there an 1 then subscribed. Up to the present time over £4O is gr ranteed When or where the sports are to be held I do not know, but I suppose the programme will be published as - usual. On Monday last the whole place up in arms at the report of the Retrenchment committee, a copy of which hy some manner of means, had reached Alexandra. A public meeting was held in the ev tiling; but, as you will doubtless have a full account of it in another column, I will refrain from making any comments.
