Mr. J. Woodward, the Receiver General of the Treasury department, arrived fromQueenstown by coach on Thursday evening the 20th instant, on his tour of inspection of the accounts of officers of his department. After performing this duty here, he left the next morning for .'aseby. A painful accident,' and one that might have been attended with very serious results, occurred on Thursday afternoon last to a little boy, about three years of age, the son of Mr. P. Calder of Alexandra, from the kick of a horse. It appears the little fellow, with other children was playing when the horse, one of a carrier’s team, came in amongst them, they all assailed it with stones, and the horse sicking out, struck him on the side of the head, Dr. Thomson, who was in Town was quickly in attendance. Wilhelmshoher, the place whore the Emperor Napoleon is confined, is a suburb of Cassel, a town of thirty five thousand inhabitants, about midway between Frankton and Hanover. In the Fried rich splatz of Cassol, a rectangular space one thousand feet long and four hundred feet broad, is the palace of the late Electors of Hesse-Cassel, and in Wilhelmshohei are situated the summer garde is of the palace. They are famous for thir water-works and conservatories, as well as for a theatre built by King Jerome Bonaparte, but which has long ceased to be used for the purpose for which it was erected. Cassol is a very handsome city, and its suburbs mid environs are very pleasant They abound in beautiful promenades, and all the main roads in the vicinity are lined with trees. The Emperor has certainly no cause to com plain of the place chosen for his prison It is many degrees bovtor than Ham. Daily Timas.

A Melbourne paper states that it is asserted on excellent on authority that Louis Napoleon owns no less than £22,000,000 sterling, and that he is the largest holder of Australian securities in the world. Among the candidates for the office of Superintendent, we hear the name of Donald Reid favorably mentioned. The Hilton Company again appeared : at the Town-ball, Clyde, on Tuesday evening last, and when a very fair audience testified its appreciation of the vocal and dramatic powers exeiclsed for their amusement. The entertainment was repeated (with change of programme) on Wednesday, when i r - was followed by dancing, and thus ended a very pleasant evening. We are now in a position to congratulate the peop'e of the District upon the class of notices that are advertised to stand for the season, Lord Clyde, who figures among the heavy draught, is a magnificent animal, and possesses as good a pedigree as any horse in the Province, he is well and favorably known in Waikouaiti where be lias stood for the last four years S’ext comes Clyde, and last, but not least thought of, Nelson. Clyde is a powerful good tempered boast, and possesses the character of being a sure foal-getter, which is always a recommendation, Nelson is a. middle, size horse, and, as a sire for light draft, is unequalled. Of the thorough bred*. Don Quixote, from having held a good position in the disfer the past four years, demands no comment Roebuck also iswell known. His one and two vear olds, of whom there are a good numherin this district, are as Genuine a guarantee of the horse’s worth as could be desired, they being highly thought of Clontart, the last o i the the list is a magnificent animal, and would occupy a prominent : position in whatever company he might be in. As a stud horse he stands A. 1, he is of an admirable temper, and is a sure foal getter. We are given to understand that the Provincial Council in snecial Session will sit about tho 15t of November. The statement that has been going the rounds of the papers to the effect that, M'Lennan, who was connected with the late “ gold robbery ” had arrived at Alexandra, and was em ployed by the squatters, we are in a position to say, is entirely without foundation. We are now in possess-on of coach communication three times weekly with Dunedin. Messrs. Cobb and Co.’s coach arrived- last evening, via Tnapeka, bringing passengers and mails.
