ALEXANDRA.

(from our OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Saving the confirming of my previons notices relating to the paying nature of the claims at Frenchman’s Point, Half Mile Beach, and Butcher,! Point, I have scarcely anything to tell you. I am induced to particularize these claims, as they are the “ Big Guns ” of the district. Of the legiun of smaller calibre, to note down their exact locale, designation, number and names of shareholders, would be far from interesting to the general reader, so I will summarise them all in one sentence. They are all in full work, with fair average results. This is fully borne out by the amount of gold sent per escort. The dredges are taking advantage of the low state of the Molyneux, and are all in full work. The gold obtained by this system is not a tithe as in previous years, but good wages in excess of working expenses is about the result. The exertions of one party the Mann herikia \V ater Race Company, is particularly noteworthy they have taken up extended claims on the beach of the Molyneux, about a mile and a half above the Tewnahip,

and have put on the requisite plant for testing the bottom. Should they succeed in striking payable gold, they will he not only deserving of the result of their labor, but also of the good wishes of the whole community, as they’ will have been the means of creating a market for any amount of labor as well as for the available water. An extention of the present racez that conduct water on the Molyneux will be necessary, or the long talked of scheme of raising water from the Mnnubcrikia will have to be carried out. The suggestion contained in your leader of the 9th inst. respecting the district bestirring itself in the matter of a share of the loan for supplying the goldfields water should be acted upon, and that at. once. Let the Municipalities take the initiative. They are hound to be supported by the miners. Up to this time the attention of those luminous bodies have been confined to the narrow limits of their boundaries. If they mean to hand their names down to posterity let them stir themselves to action for the welfare of the district, and in fact of the province. The disputed question as to the appointment of Town Clerk has been settled by the resignation of Mr. Reid. The intended “ modus operandi” of appointing his successor is not as yet public property. It is to be' hoped, for the representation of the Town, there will be no more nomineeing. Perhaps some one will enlighten me iu one point. A night School has been mooted, but without the desired effect. There are plenty of children and adults who, if one were started, wouio take advantage of it and attend. The School Committee should see to it. Have they the power to order in the matter.?
