BENDIGO GULLY.

(FROM OUR own CORRESPONDKNT. August, 16th 1870 Nothing has ‘occurred since my Ik'st effusion calling for special remark, so your readers will please, to rest satisfied with an account of the "short ami simple annals” of Bendigo as they present themselves to view at this date. One might naturally expect us the increasing extent and richness of our resources dire being daily brought to light, to witness some little exoitment or speculation, but no—we pursue the even tenor of our way almost undisturbed by the cares ana toils of business, even the whiloifi spectacle of a bacchahalian carousal is getting to be very rare, and I presume when such is the case, trade must be dull indeed or all Mr. Hall’s obstruse calculations go for nau(.h ,the sturdy colonists who expend, according to his account £SO each per annum at the shrine of Bacchus, evidently do not reside’here, no doubt we are in a state of progression, but which must be classed unuer I think the head of slow but sure. The Cromwell Company continue raising splendid stone, that at ’present passing through the mill yielding over four ounces to the ton, they will have their second battery at Work this week. The Aurora Company will commence crushing in about a week, when we may expect that the combined efforts of these powerful adjuncts will bring cur Escort returns up to the pitch necessary to induce stray capitalists to ponder on the possibility of quartz reefing becoming a paying institution in Otago. I am glad to report the Aurora Company are on first rate stone, the reef is about six feet wide carrying good gold throughout, their main level is driven about four hundred and fifty feet at a varied depth of one hundred feet, they have a shaft down to the tunnel and are now clear of the water, the stone is conveyed direct to the mill by tramway effecting an immense saving in transit, &c. 1 am informed by the manager that, the price for public crushing at this mill is reduced, the charges in future will be for one hundred tons, sixteen shillings, fifty tons, twenty shillings, and under that quantity, twenty five shillings per ton, this is a step iu the right cirectiin, and cannot fail to have a good effect in giving an impetus to further prospecting, the one thing needful to ensuie prosperity to the district. Coldough and Company are busily preparing a tramway and site for their machinery, which is reports i to be on the road from Dunedin to this place, their power will be derived from the Aurora tail water, which I understand has been rented by them. An apparently payable reef has been struck during the fortnight on what appears to bo Logan’s line, the prospectors are not yet deep enough for me to give a decided opinion upon the matter, but judging from the look of the stone. 1 should say it was worth a good trial. I noticed in your issue, July 29 th a letter signed “John Just Wages commenting upon a statement made by me in reference to the price of labor iu quartz mines, now 1 do not wish to appear rude, but I must n-ally beg to express my conviction that the effusion was not the result of a sane interval in that gentleman’s leisure, his Utopian picture of Otago, when wages come down to nothing a day is a splendid hit of word painting, audas such deserves further consideration. I will endeavor to reply to his tirade at a future date and draw the reverse of the medal, as far as my humble opinion goes, based upon actual observation,
