MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS.

The election of Mayors of the of the various M unicipalities throughout the Province were brought to a close yesterday, and it is to' be hoped the gentlemen elected to fill the highest position their fellow-citizens can elect them to will, at the conclusion of their q.erm ol office, show, by their acts, that they deserved the Lust reposed in them. Cromwell.—The contest caused the greatest excitement, the supporters of either candidate vicing with each other to secure the support of the voters. Placards, extolling the virtues of each candidate, were issued redhot from the press every hour or so, and created much feeling. A very close run Was anticipated, but the result of the poll somewhat ustonished the losing side, and, mayhap, the winning side also. The following were the number of votes recorded : Smitham ... 46 Goodger ... 29 Majority for Smitham 17 A leXadra.—No great amount of feeling way exhibited, each party having every confidence their candidate would be the succssful man ; but, as the hour for closing the poll drew nigh, a perceptible disquietude was evident, every one appearing anxious to know the result. At fifteen minutes past four o’clock Mr. Beresford* the Returning officer, declared the numbers polled as follows : Theyers ... 31 Chappie ... 30 Majority for Theyers 1 Mr. Theyers briefly returned thanks for the honor that had been conferred upon him. Mr. J. C. Chappie thanked those who had supported him, and said that, although Hot placed at the top of tie poll on this occasion, he hoped to be

more fortunate on a fixture one, and although not elected to the office of Mayor, he would nevertheless do his utmost to promote the welfare of the town and district. lie then proposed a vote of thanks to the Returning Officer. At the invitation of Mr. Theyers, the majority of those present adjourned to the Royal Mail Hotel, and there partook of ft most excellent cold collation.

Queenstown. —It is true there was a contest, but it was virtually a walkover for Mr. Hallenstein, as proved hy the result of the poll: Hallenstein ... 132 M - Lai - en ... 24 Majority of Hallensteir 108 Tuapeka. Mr! Horace Bastings was elected (for the fifth time) Mayor of Lawrence.
