LOCAL AND GENERAL.
The English Mail closes at Clyde on Tuesday next, the 28th inst., at the usual hour.
As will be seen by the advertisement in another column, a soiree, in aid of the school funds, will be held at Alexandra, on Monday, the 4th of July next, chair to be taken at hall-past seven o’clock.
On reference to our advertising columns it will be seen that a public meeting will be held at Hawthorne’s hotel, Clyde, to-morrow (Saturday) evening, for the purpose of electing a committee of management for the Dunstan commonage. As this is a matter which concerns all parties, we would recommend the attendance of every individual resident in the district.
Dr. Carr, the well-known lecturer on phrenology and mesmerism, will shortly pay a visit to Clyde. There is not the slightest doubt but that he will be well patronised, from he general satisfaction he gives to his numerous audiences.
During a recent sitting of the Alexandra Police Court, Victoria, a heavy door, which tvas unhinged, fell down with great violence within a few inches of the head of one of the J.P.’s sitting on the Beach. The local paper, in its report of the occurrence, says:—“ ‘A miss is as good as a mile,’ but surely it does not follow that the Government should wait until one of our local J.P.’s meets with an accident before suitable accommodation is afforded for holding our Courts of Justice."
We have been requested to draw attention to the sale of a large lot ot drapery goods Ac, damaged slightly by water, occasioned by the late floods, on their road up from Dunedin—The sale will take place on Friday and Saturday next the Ist and 2nd July, at the store of Mr. J Samson, Weatherstone House Alexandra, at 12 o’clock sharp, each day. The roads in tile Lake District are in a frightful state caused by the continuous late heavy rains—from the same cause, mining diallers are not as brisk as could be wished.
A public ideating was held last Saturday night, the 18th instant, at the Junction Commercial Hotel-, Cromwell, to consider the subject of a commonage for the district, Mr. Burres was in the chair. Most of the influential men of the district addressed the meeting, Which was a very crowded one.
We notice that a gentleman well known here, and who some three years ago migrated to Cromwell, is a candidate for the highest Municipal honors. We allude to Mr William Smithara, and we are of opinion if honesty of purpose and a fearless discharge of the duties pertaining to the office will conduce to the prosperity of the town, “Smitham’s the man.” At the usual meeting of the Waste Lands Board, held on the 15th inst., Mr. Pyke’s application to purchase his residence area, Clyde, was considered, and plan 2, consisting of two acres and eleven poles, was approved. It was also decided that the valua lion should be 383/., to be paid by the purchaser in the usual manner.
