DRYBREAD
(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Dp.vbp.ead, May 10. A numerously attended public meeting was held at the Scandinavian Hotel last evening forthe purpose of having a Warden’s Court held here monthly j also, for the attendance of Mr. Field, the Clerk of the Court, fortnightly. Mr. Hinchcliffe, who was elected chairman, in a neat and appropriate manner briefly explained the object of the meeting. After several gentlemen had spoken, all of whom concurred in the object of the meeting, resolutions were adopted and carried unanimously, “That a petition be at once drawn up and forwarded to the Superintendent,” after which the meeting separated. ? Through some informality in making an application for a slaughtering license, Mr. Mellor was fined in the mitigated penalty
of £5. He has since opened his butcher’s shop, and has gladdened our eyes with such a shew of meat as that individual the oldest inhabitant never saw before, and at prices hitherto unheard of in this district. Ho appears to be driving a good trade. Another step in the right direction ! Mr. Cairns, not willing to be beaten, has reduced the price of bread from Is. Gd. to Is. the four-pound loaf. In mining there is nothing fresh to report.
All the races are runmng full. Several of them have had beaks-away, but they have sll been repaired again. The weather is all that could be desired for this season of the year. Several parties intend washing-up shortly, with, I am informed, very good prospects.
A typographical error occurred in my
last communication, by which you substituted runholder for raceholder, in reference to the road from the township to the miner’s homes. I should be obliged if you Woukl correct it in your next issue.
The prices here run as follows:—Mutton, sd. to 4d. ; beef, Gd. to 7d. ; steak, Bd. ; bread. Is. per 41b. loaf ; potatoes, 10s. per cwt. ; oats, 4s. Gd. per bushel j flour, £2 per 2001b. bag ; tea, 2s. 9d. to .Is. per lb.; butter, Is. Gd. per lb. ; and other stores at equally low rates.
