LOCAL AND GENERAL
The series of land »ales which have recently been held l>y Mr. Surveyor George have resulted as fol ows Alexandra, five sections ; Clyde, seven sections and fourteen subur ban blocks; Bendigo, eight sections, Newcastle, eight sections; Gladstone, tifty-two sections. We huva this -reek hj d an opportunity of witnessing the very clever performance of Miss Dolly Green, who made her first appearance here on Monday evening last in a monologue entertainment, entituled “'ihe ■Seven ages of Woman,’ commencing with the infant under the especial care of tire veritable “ Sairy Gamp,” —who, by tire way, possesses strong “medical comfort,*' proc ivities, —and proceeding through the various stages of life, culminating in the appearance on the s- eue of “ Granny Grey,” who, how in her dotage, takes a most lively interest iu the juveniles, who gather round her to li to t n the reminiscences brought back vividly to her memory at sight of their innocent faces, ol “Vv hen I was a little girl.*’ It is superfluous to Say that, considering the smallness of our population, tie Town-hall was well filled on each occasion. The musical portion of the entertainment was under ihe direction of M. Fh-ury. who was most ably a-sisted by Mr. IJ Milburn. The overture to “Zarnpa’ was played m a most masterly manner, ami we ninth doubt if such pe> faction has been hitherto exhibited iu Clyde since it became a township, albeit we have had at limes no lack of good and clever instrumentalists. The task of keeping a. som- what critical audience amused and pleased for three consecutive hours is no light one. This Miss Green undertook to do, and not only made the efibr*, i-ui fully succeeded in accomplishing her object. It would lake up too much of our space to enumerate the whole of the charaters which Miss Doily Green, in r pid succession, personated ; and, where all weie so excellent'y portrayed it is very d fiicult to select, a y for especial commendation ; in tact, we are puzzled to say in which peiso iticatioii we mostly admired the fair entertainer. Not the hj ast pleaiug part was the very happily eonreived and cleverly executed introduction of the various clia ac;ers n tiestage, and the clear and distine uit.-ra d may well serve as an example to many ef those who speak at our public meetings. In concluding we will express a hope that, the tour of Miss Green and M. Fleurv wil afford them pecuniary gains in proportion to the pleasure they hive affo ded up country residents ; and, it su-li is the case, they will have no cause to regret paying ns a visit. A 1 Cromwell was astir yesterday m<irniog. It was not only St. Pairick’ day, iu r was likewise the day appointed for the celebration of the nuptials of one of the pioneers of quartz-reefing in Bendigo Gully—Me. The evenings amusements terminated with dancing, which was kept up with surprising energy till a very lale hour (even for ihe morning). The Nevis aid Morvefi Punts on the Kawarau River were offered fiir public competition on Tuesday last, Mr. W. J. Barry being the knight of (he hammer. The punts were knocked down to the owners a, ooo£ each, the reserved price bei ig something considerably over that amount.
Register. Register. Register. As (he time for lodging applications to be placed on the Electoral roll expires on the 31st h'-stant, we would again claim the attention of all possessing the necessary qualification and urge upon them to enroll themselves at once, or they will lie disfranchised for a space of twelve months. The want of forms is no longer any excuse* as they are to be obtained at every government office throughout the district. The West Coast Timm in a r cent article speaks of the ('minty of West iand as being in a prosperous condition, surpassing all other Provinces ; •he County Council’as being qnhe a model for imitation, and having passed creditably through many difficulties. Mr. an dMrs. Gee gave an vocal, instrumental, and miscellaneous entertainment, at the National Hotel, on Wednesday evening The attendance was but small. According to the Dully Timtu we have fortunately escaped receiving an accession to our a ready (proportionately) criminal population. On the arrival of the ship Nightingale, from Western Australia, Sergeant Mallard boarded her, and found live men whom he believed to be, convicts illegally at large. As these men did not give a satisfactory account of themselves they were arrested and placed in durance vile, pending inquiry into their antecedents
Yestordoy (St. Patrick,B Day) a match was played between the Clyde and Matakanui Clubs. The weather was all that could be wished for. In the first innings the Clyde Chib scored sixty-nine runs; in the second only thirty-four. The Matakanui Club were credited with sixty-four in their first innings, coming off victorious with three wickets to spare. The play tolerably fair, but showed an evident want of practice. By the local journal we learn that the minor’s strike at the Hogbtirn is almost at an end, all the miners, with the exception of a few claimholders on Surface Hill, have resumed .work The rate charged for water is 40s per head per week. The Victorian Racing Club have issued their programme for the Spring and Autumn Meeting (1870-1). Mr Mr. Bagot the Secretary of the Club, announces bv circular that “ Messrs. M‘Meek an, Blackwood, and Co. have agreed to carry, free, from New Zealand and back, any horses winning and receiving first money in any of the thirty seven i-aces included in the programme.” The prizes ottered ar • on a most liberal scale, and coupled with the liberality of the owners of the line of steamers, off r a sufficient inducement to the owners of thoroughbreds to try their fortunes in the sister colony, and we have no doubt but that many will avail themselves of the opportunity, Another proof of the richness of 'be Otago l. old fields has lately come to our knowledge. A short time ago a party sold out of a claim on one f the tenures in the Upper Shot-over district, for the sVitfl of S'^G / Tim purchasers were two thoroughly prai-d-a.l men. In a fortnight, with the issistance of wages men, they had realized sufficient to cover the pur-chase-money, and they have since been making a net income of about 150/. per week par man. We are informed that Gm.dger’s Junction Hotel, Ciomwell, is about to be placed under fresh management, and that Mr Joseph Harding, formerly of the Union Hotel, Dunedin, will be the future host We wish Mr. Harding success in his new undertaking. On Tuesday last, at Cromwell Mr. W. J. Barry sold by auction about lorty cases of kerosene, the price averaging about 2s. 10d. per gallon. The purchasers were mostly storekeepers in the town. From an lilug'ish paper we extract the following,-—•“ The suburban village <>f Blai kheath, has recently bad a remarkable accession to its infant population, the wife ~f a clergyman, resident on the heath gave birih, on tlie Bill instant to twin girls, within 11 months of a similar birth of twin gir s, ad four children being alive and doing well. The parents have thus four daughters, all of them under a year old. By reference b. our advertising columns it will be seen that Miss • oily Green and M. Bleary will, ou their return from the Lakes district, give at -Clyde their popular entertainment, in aid of the funds of the Dunstan District Hospital.
