BRINDISI VERSUS MARSEILLES.
“An Australian Firm,” dating from Coleman-street, London, writes to tho Daily News, showing tho alleged advantages of the overland Brindisi, over the usual Marseilles route for Australian letters. The “ Firm ” state: “On Friday evening, Jan. 21, wo received, vid Brindisi, a letter from Sydney, posted Dec. 4. On Monday morning, Jan. 21, we received, vid Marseilles, our other Australian letters, posted tho same time and carried by the same steamers to Suez. This shows a saving of two days and a half in favour of Brindisi.” Suppose a firm receives monthly, say an average of .£20,000 in drafts to bo accepted from sight, tho two days’ interest at present bank rate would be nearly £3 Ss., making about £4O a year thrown away—at fivo pet cent, interest it would be about £(l4. The “ Firm ” are of opinion that the Brindisi route is by far tho best, and if tho public support it properly, tho P. and O. Company must eventually send the mails by it. “Another Australian Firm ” of Milk-street, and “ JG. M.,” of 32, Walbrook, support tho first correspondents, and aver that the advantage is equal both to tho outward as well as the homeward mails. Wo suppose that when the Mont Cenis Tunnel is opened that the Brindisi will be generally used in preference to tho Marseilles route, both on account of dispatch and its commercial advantage.
