OXFORD and CAMBRIDGE BOAT RACE.
At Oxford, the abundance of ice in the Isis (which is not, however, frozen over like the Cam) has materially interfered with the practice of the orew, who have been unable to go out in their eight. The president, who is most persistent in his efforts to make a good orew, has, however, had the men oat in pairs and fours for several days past, in the absence of their regular practice to Iffiey and baok twice, and he has been engaged in coaohing them in sets from tho stern of a four to the imminent danger of the boat. The river Isis is in some parts blocked. There appears every prospect of a long frost, so that there are more improbable things than the great annual race falling through this year. The following is the crew: —1. S. H. Woodhouse, University, list.7lbs.; 2. A. G. Lewis, University, 11 st. 8 lb.; 3. H. E. Burgess, Brasonose, 12 st. 4 lb.; 4. J. E. EdwardsMoss, Balliol, 12 st. 111b; 5. T. S. Baker, Queen's, 12 st. 111b.; 6. F. E. Payne, St. John's, 12 st. 71b.; 7. B. Tahourdin, St. John's, 12st. lib.; Stroke, T. H. A. Houblon, Christ Church, 10 st. 101b. Ordinarily, the race would bo rowed on Saturday, April 9, and the men would go into training on Ash Wednesday.
The very severe frost whioh set in at Cambridge has prevented all possibility of rowing, and this is, perhaps, not so much to be regretted as would seem at firßt sight, as there are eight weeks more beforo the day of the race—the 9th of April. We are glad to know that Mr. Macmiohael (Downing) is expected with the President, to take seats in the boat on the arrival of Mr. Morrison. Bidley, who has hitherto being rowing Btroke, will probably be removed to the fore part of tho boat, and take his place finally at No. 2. The important post of stroke will bo filled by Goldio, the President, who will be well supported at No. 7by the stalwart Australian Strachan, of Trinity Hall. We cannot help thinking that it would be very questionable policy to remove Phelps from No. 6, as, next only to Goldie, he is undoubtedly the best oar in the boat. Macmichaol will most likely bo intrusted with the post he filled last year, No. 5. Crew:—l. S. Randolph, Third Trinity, list. 41b.; 2. J. H. Bidley, Jesus, list. 121b.; 3. J. W. Dale, Lady Margaret, 12st.; 4. E. A. Spencer, Second Trinity, 12st. 61b.; 5. W. P. Macmichael, Downing, 12st. 71b.; 6. E. Phelps, Sidney 12at. Gib.; 7. J. P. Strachan, Trinity Hall, 12st. 41b.; 8. J. H. D. Goldio, Lady Margaret, 12st. 21b. ; Cox., H. E. Gordon, First Trinity,Bst. AReserveFourhasbeenstated, but canufat be relied on positively, as it is, of course, subject to certain contingencies. The University crew have been practisinginanew boat built by Searle,of Cambridge and Lambeth.
