(from ouu own correspondent.)

February 9,

Of mining news I have little to reeor 1 , In the out gullies most of the minors are repairing damages done by the late Hoods. Our quartz-reef claims are in a state of progression, but as yet with no definite r suits, the necessary depth not having been reached, but 'every confidence is felt by the many shareholders as to ultimate success.

On Monday evening last a meeting of tlie members of the School Committee was held, the whole of the members being present. A letter was read from Mr. Reid, in reply to an offer made to that gentleman respecting his future salary as Master of the Alexandra School. The reply not being 'considered satisfactory, a motion was carried to the effect that such letter ho not received. Mr lleiu gave an explanation as to the purport of ids letter, when the motion was rcosinded Mr. lieid pie 'ging himself to give a definite reply prior to the next monthly meeting. It was resolved that the Secretary write to the Educational Hoard respecting the appointment of a Schoolmistress ami ashing for information as to subsidy. A desultory conversation then ensued rola-

tive to the charges for school hoi ks and stationery, and Mr. I’tid having given a

satisfactory explanation, the meeting separated with the usual vote of thanks to the

Chairman.

A little boy, two y ars of age, sou of iir. It. S. Stewart, was taken ill some t' ree 'days ago and died this morning. Water on the brain was the cause of death.

A meeting will he Irdd this evening convene-' for the purpose of placing before the ratepayers, an offer from Wilson & Co’, Dunedin, for.supplying the Town from the Motynenx with water by hrcepnmps, erect ingtanks , at a cost of £-!"i0, guaranteeing a supply much larger than the present consumption ; the scheme seems to meet the want, and as it has been well considered in committee, it is to he hoped that the public will endorse those views, ami fin I the necessary amount to cover the expenditure, and that the work may ho commenced without further delay ; not only is the water required for domestic purposes, hut the holders of property and merchant- in the Town would he enabled to effect an Insurance at an easy rate, which at the present time could not ho entertained by the directors of any Fire Insurance Office, the risk at present, without an adequate water supply being too great for a Policy to be granted.
