CLYDE PUBLIC LIBRARY.

A meeting qf th - subscribers was hold an Saturday last tin the old Council Chambers for the purposo of receiving the report of the retiring Committee ami to elect a new Committee in its place. The Mayor occupied the Chair, ami after explaining the object of the meeting, called upon Mr. Cambridge to explain the position of the Institution. Mr. Cambridge said that, owing to various camcs doubtless well known to those present, the retiring Committee had been enab ed to make but little progress during the past year. Until very recently they had been without a room to usd for a Li-

brary, and ho (the Secretary) had, as far as laid in his power, met this want by keeping the books on his own premises. From b this cause the subscriptions had very much (alien dff, and the affairs of the Library

were in a very unsatisfactory state. He was happy to say there was now a better prospect, as they had been granted the use of the old Council Chambers, and it was most desirable that the Library should be got into working order without delay, as nothing had been done during the present Committee's term of 6ffico there was nothing to report. Mr. George Fache said, that it must be a matter of regret to all that circumstances had for the last twelve mouths retarded the progress of the Institution, but trusted, now that they had a room at their disposal everyone would endeavor to place the affairs of the Library on a more substantial and satisfactory footing than had previously been the case.

The Chairman pointed out to the mooting the necessity of electing gentlemen on the new Committee who would take an interest in making the Library as efficient as possisible, and hoped that every resident woo Id so abpport it that it will prove a credit and benefit to the town.

A cordial vote of thftnks was unanimously given to Mr. Cambridge for performing the duties of Librarian and for his kindness in taking charge of the books during the past year, the Chairman remarking that very few would have devoted so much time and attention to the affairs of the Institution as Mr. Cambridge had done.

Messrs- Hazlett, Pyke, Barlow, George, Cambridge, Fache, and Hueston were then e ecte l a Committee, and the meeting terminated with the usual vote of thanks to the Chairman.
