During the year great improvements have been made in aid around the Hospital. A residence for the Surgeon has been erectea ; a refractory ward of stone has been built ; Alexandra Ward and the kitchen have been lino ! throughout with hoards, and thoroughly ventilate 1. The chimney of Alexau ra Ward has been re-huilt, and that of Albert Ward has been built two feet hi her, and other improvements, such as papering and paining, have also Ken effected in the If - pital. A large iron tank has been fixed m the water-race at its highest dotation, and the water conveyed from it to the Hospital in pipes, adding greatly to its sanitary condition. The water would likewise be most useful in the event of lire. A thatched roof has been put over the pantry, a portion of the out'buildings ha’ been converted into a wash-house, and the boiler usul for washing and other purposes set in stone work. The remaining portion of the reserve has been substantially and securely fenced in, ”n I three acres ploughed up and planted with potatoes. “Your Committee have t.o report that, on the 17th of January last, Dr. Shaw was granted three months’ leave of absence, a.ul Dr. Niven was appointed acting fn - geon. On the 2Sth of June Dr. Si aw sent in his resignation, when Dr Nevhi was reengaged. On the 17 th of August a special general meeting of the contributors was held, for the purpose of electing a Resident Surgeon, in the place of Dr. Shaw, resigned. There were sixteen candidates, but the voting was between Dos. haw and Barrows, and resulte i in a tie. Another election was ihrefore held on the 14th of September, when Dr. Burrows, M.R.C.S.E., was duly electee ; but that gentleman being unable to take charge of the Hospital until the end of October, Dr. Thomson was temporarily engaged. Dr. Burrows commenced his duties as Resident Surgeon on the Ist of November, at a salary sf X 420 per an:' num. “ During the year one hundred patient have been admitted into the Hospital which, together with sixteen remaining a f t the commencement of the year, will give a total of one hundred and sixteen who have been relieved. Out of this number ninety have been discharged, cured, or relieved, thirteen have died, and thirteen still remain in the house.
