ST. BATHAN’S.
(from our own correspondent.) January 9. The flood last week prevented my communication from reaching you in time for press, the Mailman being unable’ to cross the Manuherikia ; in fact, for three days we were shut in on all sides, the Dunstan Creek having been greatly Bwolleti by th 6 late rains. Three gentlemen from Welshman’s Gully, in attempting to cross in a buggy, were swept down stream, and escaped with great difficulty and some damage to the vehicle. It was fortunate the rain whs not general, or the damage to the country would have been immense. Considerable injury has been done to all tho races in the district. The rivets ate . how rapidly assuming a lower level, but it will be weeks before matters are put .' straight and Work generally resumed. Tho Scandinavian and
Enterprise Water-races appear to have suffered most, and a number of men are dilligently employed in repairing them. The weather does not seem to he finally settled yet, as indications portend more rain. In this matter, vulgalarly speaking, it is always either a “ hunger or a hurst’” The Mount Ida Race Meeting comes off next Thursday and Friday, and, from all appearances, there is likely to he a great gathering. Messrs. Keenan and Morgan, the sportsmen par excellence of this place, have despatched their two “flyers,” Topsy and Gamecock, to compete, and it is generally hoped and expected that they have a show of success. Nearly afl St. Bathan’s will he there to witness the contests.
The effect of the excess've charge for water in this place is becoming plainly visible. Several claimholders have ceased working, and intend seeking “fresh fields and pastures new.” The companies, by their suicidal policy, are diminishing the value of their shares, and may, at no distant date, expect to find themselves almost without customers. When that ultimatum occurs they may possibly realise the full effects of their shortsightedness, and bitterly regret the continued extortion of L 4 per week per head from their hard-working well-meaning constituents.
