ST. BATHAN’S ANNUAL RACES.
The'annual race meeting took place on the 27th and 28th ult., and, as we anticipated from the attractive programme issued by the Race Committee, resulted in the largest gathering, both of bipeds and quadrupeds, that ever graced the St. Bathan’s course. The weather during both days was magnificent, and to this may be attributed an unusually D.’vge attendance of the gentler sex. The course was in capital y>rder, and the arrangements of the Stewards Were admirably carried out, without the k slightest’hitch. M . The first day’s races commenced with 1 The Maiden Plate of 20 sovs. y Mr. Grant’s h.c. Waitaki, 3 years 1 * M’Phail’s g.m. Shepherdess, aged 2 Allen’s c.f. Norah, 4 years 3 Handyside’s g.g. Earl King, aged Douglas’s b.m. Agnes, 5 years Ait-ken’s blk.h. Bare-hones, aged Town Plate of 60 sovs., with a sweepstake of 2 sovs. each added. Two miles. Mr. Keenan’s c.m. Topsey, 5 years 1 Allen’s brg. Hawkdun, 4 years 2 M ‘Kay’s Nigger, aged 3 Mellor’s b.g. Merrythought _ imdyridc’h g.g. Earl king c.g. Game Cock favorite horses for this race were Merrythought and Game Cock. The former bolted when half way round the course, the latter following suit, Topsey won by about two lengths. Publican’s Purse of 20 sovs One mile heats. There were seven entries for this event. It was a well contested run, both heats were won by Mr. B. Washer’s, b.m. Mias Ennes, 5 years. Hack Race of 10 sovs, with a sweepstake t»f ten shillings. Ten horses came to the post. Mr. Taylor’s g.m. Venus won both heats, the last one by half a head only. Second Day. Hack Selling Race, of 20 sovs. Distance >'one mile. R. Aitken’a b.g Black Doctor, 1 1 ■ H. Handysido b.g. Harkaway, 2 Taylor's g.m. Venus, > 3 f • Seven other horses started for this rice, \ Vhich was won easily by the Doctor. The
winner was sold immediately after the race for £ls, £lO of which went to the owner, and £5 to the race fund. St. Bathan’s Cup of 50 sovs., .with a sweop-stako of £ sovs. added. Distance, two miles. Mr. T. Keenan’s ch.m. Topsey, 5 years 1 B. Washer’s b.m. Miss Ennes 2 S. Inder’s b.m. Substance, aged 3 Allen’s h.g. Hawkdun, 4 years T. Keenan’s ch.%. Game Cock, 3 years J. Mellor’s b.g. Merrythought, 4 years L. Grant’s b.h. Waitaki, 3 ye°rs Meriiythoaght and Game-Cock again disappointed their backers by bolting as (n the previous day. The race between Topsy and Miss Ennes was well contested, the former winning by half a length. Ladies Purse of 20 sovs. Welter weightsGentlemen riders Distance, one mile and a quarte.r. Mr. H. Handyside’ab.g. Harkaway, aged, 1 B. Washer’s b.m. Miss Ennes, 5 yrs. 2 A. M'Phail’s g.m. Sheperdess, aged, 3 T. Keenan’s ch.h. Game Cock, 3 years J. Mellor’s b.g. Merrythought, 4 years This was a splendid "race, Harkaway winning by a head. Consolation Stakes of 15 sovs. for all beaten horses. Distance, one mile and a half. No weight under 9st. Mr. S. Inder’s b.m. Substance, aged, 1 A. M'Phail’s g.m. Shepherdess, aged 2 Allen’s b.g. Hawkdun, 4 years 3 Mellor’s b.g. Merrythought, 4 years A capital race. SuhstMice winning by half a length. Hack race for £5 with a sweepstake of ten shillings added. Distance, one mile. Seven hfcrses started for this race, which was won easily by Mr. Grant’s eh.g Charley. Hurry Scurry, for £5. Distance, one mile. Eight horses came to the post for this event, which was won by Mr. Grant’s Butterfly.
