ALEXANDRA.

(from a correspondent.) Dec. 15. On Wednesday evening last seven nominations were received for the District Handicap, for our Alexandra Race Meeting, after which the Stewards met for the purpose of adjusting the weights, which on reference to another portion of your issue will, I have no doubt prove satisfactory to those interested.

In my last I mentioned the sale of a I .are in a ground sluicing claim at ButchI /'.a Gully, and as this rich alluvial gully *iias been worked now during a series of years; I have great pleasure in forwarding the following particulars received from an authentic source. Some three years past, Mr. Jenner. who has just parted with his interest, applied for a claim, and permission to construct a tail race, which he has constantly Worked up to the present time, and with the exception of assistance for some five week®, has worked a large scope of ground single handed, and for that period of time has netted the handsome sum of L1;025 sterling, irrespective of all working expenses connected with the claim. Since the opening of this claim, another party has taken up ground ahead, and after a large outlay of labour, have succeeded in obtaining such weekly yields, as will amply repay them for all past outlay ; in this gully there are no less than thirteen sluicing companies, w’ith expensively constructed tail raees, some of which exceed six hundred yards in length, whose proprietors have steady work for years to come. The main road from Dunedin via the Teviot, and which crosses Butcher’s and passes by the Alexandra Reef, to this

township, is increasing its traffic rapidly, and is now a favorite road for travellers. At M‘Kersie and Duly’s punt Messrs. Strode and Fraser, on Monday last, crossed no less than five thousand four hundred sheep in less than two hours, without causing interference or delay to the ordinary traffic.

On Monday the Warden’s time was principally occupied in granting certificates to applicants for quartz claims. An application was also made for the construction of a tail race at Long Valley, on the Serpentine Creek, which application was opposed by two different parties. The Warden adjourned the case until such time as asurvey had been made, at the cost of the applicants.
