ALEXANDRA.

(from a correspondent.) November 17

On Monday Mr Fache bold a sale of the Caledonian water-race and claim, formerly held by Wood and party, situate on the Half-mile Beach. The Gentleman had a very attentive and numerous audience. As the sale of this property had been greatly discussed by miners, not only relative to its great value, but from the manner in which the i.issolutiun of the partnership had been effected, viz.—through the Warden’s Court, and I may here remark that the general opinion held by miners on this field is that, a partnership broken up by the simple will of a Warder, is of too arbitrary a nature, and in cases of forced dissolution the party wishing to break up the Company should he made to specify a price that he would b- either Willing to give n receive; and although inthis case the copartners have every reason to be satisfied with the price obtained for their property, yet in most instances when a forced sale is made such a result could not be anticipated The sale took place shortly after the closing of the War eu’s Court, the first bid being one hundred pounds, after which something more substantial was ottered in the shape of a £IOOO, from this time, the bidding was very spirited, after reaching £2OOO, it became quite excitable ns 110 after £lO was added to the bids, finally it was knock d down, amidst great cheering to Mr. M. Kett, manager and shareholder of the Frenchman’s claim, for the large sum of £2BOO, and I have no doubt that with this gentleman’s known capacity in the management of largo alluvial claims, that the whole of this great outlay wili at the expi ration of the coming season be returned to the Company's exchequer, as there is not the least reason to doubt but that tht y have purchased not only valuable wabr privileges, but a claim of more than ordinary richness, and one that will favorably compare with the one before mentioned, in which they held so large an interest, and from which they have extracted such large quantities of the precious metal. Our Quartz Reefs arc still being thoroughly prospected. HallidaJ' And party have just forwarded their two trial tons to the Hills Creek Machine, and the manager hi.e kindly .consented to put it through imme. diately on its. arrival; no less than five takeq up the adjoining ground Start we acw ftriilrtg fcr the ‘ tee i

this crushing prove favorable, steps will be immediately taken to erect the necessary machinery, a large water race to be cut from the Gorge Creek terminating at the Molyneux is in active construction, which will prove of great Value both to the reefers and sluicnrs in the immediate neighbourhood.

Shortly after the sale of mining property on Monday, a match was run off between Mr. Pickering’s xtia're Coquette and Mr. Hill house’s mare Crazy Jane, the former winning very easily ; on the ensuing evening ariother race was ruh for £5 aside, when Coq’iiette was easily beaten by a mare belonging to Mr, Thomas Hubbard ; these horses from their known capabilities caused some small amount of speculation amongst our sporting friends, and a goodly number were present on both occasions. The sluicing claim at the Mamiherikia Gorge, some six miles from this, and known as belonging to Blackwell and party are obtaining excellent returns; three shares have lately changed hands, and the last sold, realised close upon £'4oo. Mr I owe of the Galloway Station, some short time since made a purchase at a lest figure ; the claim has since returned to him the whole of his outlay, and is at the present yielding him handsome returns, and I am cie libly informed that the present shareholders are netting no less in weekly divider! ’s from £ls to £2O per week.. A good sample of lime stone rock was brought in to day from Tucker Hill, within one m le from the Township, a few bigs of which will bo burnt, to test its quality*.
