The Government have receive 1 inf irnution that Tamati Ngapora (Manuhiri) and the King natives have requested an interview with Mr. M'Lean, who ha- appointed Hamilton or Alexandra as the scene of the conference. November 3. The Maori prisoners will leave for the South in the liangatira as soon as the weather moderates. There are seventy four in number. Their sentences have been commuted into terms of penal servitude varying from three to seven years. Tanroa is in the latter category. This includes all the Pakakohe hapn, except the old men who were discharged, and two boys, who will be placet on board the Blanche.
A party of the Naatiporou garrison at Waihi, while out scouting the other day, came upon a party of Tito Kowaru’s men at Ngapuhi. They captured throe men and two women, and shot two men who attempted to escape. They are well known rebels, and were armed with double barrelled guns. An old woman who was taken tolls a circumstantial story of Te Kooti being on the Upper Waitara—close to Tito Kowaru—bally wounded, but recovering. The mail steamer is detained, owing to the inclemency of the weather, but will sail to morrow morning, if possible. Nelson, November 3. The news from the Wangapeka rush is very satisfactory. are already at a premium, more being in demand. Wellington, November 4. The Maori prisoners sailed for Otago in the llangatiru this afternoon. Napier, November 4. News has reached here that Paora Hape, a friendly Taupo chief, was shot in a war dance held at Taupo. Henare Tomoana has arrived here from Taupo, bringing Te Hen Hau with him as ft prisoner. The latter states that every road to escape is closed against Te Kooti, who has no food except fern roots and berrii s and who is certain to be captured if he is followed up. The Waikatos have given him up, and are prepared to attack him shonbl he attempt to enter their territory. Te Kooti’s original intention was to go to Poverty Bay, and, after obtaining reinforcements there, to attack Wairoa. The White Hoad Brewery was destroyed by fire last night, i t was insured for £650. November 5. The following is the latest news from Auckland Mr. M‘Lean left Auckland for the Waikato on the 3rd, for the purpose of having an interview with the Maori King. He is accompanied by Colonel Fraser and a native interpreter. Te Pokiha has written a letter to Mr. M ‘Lean requesting him to put a stop to the illegal prospecting in the Ohinenmri district, where it is reported that rich gol 1 bearing quartz has been struck by the prospecting parties. A rifle match, which took place yesterday; between No 1 Company Wellington Biflos and the Napier Hi fie Club, was won by the former by sixty points.
