ALEXANDERA.
(FROM a COTUIES POXDENT.) At this particular season of the year, when the whole of the river claims, especially those at Frenchman’s Point, Half M ile Beach, and Bu'chers Point are under the-water, business is not very brisk, but despite of this, our little town looks quite cheerful, ns several new buildings are being erected, and substantia 1 improvements are lining made to those al ready in existence. In the Town, Mr. Rate ift'e is having erected a stone building, in which he will carry on the combined trades of timber merchant, carpenter, blacksmith and wheelwright ; hitherto, there has been only one of these respective trades in our midst,' consequently the want of a little wholesome competition has been
felt. Our worthy Mayor, (Mr. Finlay) is also having erected a dwelling hj -vise of a sub-tantial character, which will he a great ofnanvmt to the town. The greatest improvement, and the one that will benefit the District generally the most, is the brewery, that is being erected by Messrs Thayers and I'eek just on the Town boundary ; the building is of stone, and is eighty feist long, by twenty five in width, roofed with iron. Borne time ince, in a leading article you dwelt at some length on the benefits the promoters of local industries would confer on one and all ; this fact is thoroughly recognised, and I have not a doubt, but ’hat the enterprising brewers, Messrs Theyers and Beck, will reap a rich reward for their outlay; (he most of the material is on the ground, and from what I hear, brewing operations will soon be commenced.
Our Municipal differences are at last settled, and the Councillor’s chair vacated by Mr. Alexander Jack is filled by Mr. Peter Calder. I say affairs are settled, but that is an open question, as the elec’ion was most extraordinary, there were three candidates nominated, and the Mayor, who l(resided, took up >n himself to declare Mr. Calder duly elected ; now, by what right, or under what law the election was settled so sunimararily, is not general y known.
In tlie Warden's Court, a dispute which for some lime past has been pending between a party of miners owners of a water race, heading from Butcher’s Creek, and a'sn of a fouracre claim on the Half-mile Beach, was finally settled on Monday last, Mr. Warden Pyke ordering a dissolution of partnership, and placing the property in the hands of Mr. George Fache, Official Agent, to wind up. Mr. Facin’ was instructed to sell the propoitv by public auction on Monday, the 15th November The claim is a most valuable one, and is expected to realize between 2,000/. and 3,000/. From a small paddock nearly two hundred ounces of gold were taken
Those of our miners who are working away from the Molyneux, and coiisiqiient.lv not affected by the summer floods, are, to all appearance, doing well The Balmoral rush still holds some dozen parties, who are making very fair xvages.
