ALEXANDRA TOWN COUNCIL.
The usual fortnightly mi eting of the Council was held in the Council Chamber, on Friday evening last, at the usual hour. Present: the Mayor, ami Councillors Beresford and Thcyers. The minutes of previous meeting were read and confirmed. Outward eorrospondenca was read and approved. Inward read and received. A letter wasreadfrom Colonial Secretary’s Office, acknowledging receipt of advice of election of Mr. Finlay, as Mayor A letter was read from Mr. J. Sperry, Clerk to Treasurer, advising having placed to the credit of the Corporation £129 Gs., hemg subsidy of £2 to £1 on halt year’s rates, ending Ist August. A letter was read from Mr. Warden Pyke, in reference to the application of Messrs. Paget and Milne, through his office, for a lease of eight acres of land for coal mining purposes, within the boundary of the township, and asking if the Corporation had any objection to the granting of the said lease. Ordered to stand over till Monday, when the subject would be inquired into.
A letter was read from the Town Clerk, Clyde, asking if this Council would join with Clyde, Cromwell, and Queenstown Municipalities, inhavingone hundred copies of “The Otago Municipal Corporations Ordinance, 1865,” &c., printed. The Town Clerk was instructed to reply, and state that this Council was willing to bear its share of one hundred copies being printed. A letter was read from Cr. Jack, tendering his resignation as Councillor for Manuherikia Ward. The letter was received and ordered to lie over till next meeting, to give Mr. Jack an opportunity of re-con-sidering bis decision. The application of Mr. Stewart to lea'm sections fourteen and fifteen, block four, Municipal reserve, was granted, at a rental of £1 per year, as per agreement. Two tenders were received for forming and gravelling Limerick-street. Both tenders being much above the sum proposed to be expended, neither of the tenders were accepted.
Accounts to the amount of £44 7s. 6d. were passed for payment.
The Tosvn Clerk said that it was his wish that the building which he occupies should be rented to him, and agreed to pay a fair interest, as rental, on cost of building. It W;3 resolved accordingly that a rental, at the ) ate of si x per cent, he charged from Ist August last.
Sergeant Neil was nominated to the office of Inspector of weights and measures, without salary. Not tee was g : vcn by Cr. Theyers, That he would move at next sitting that a sum not exceeding £ls he expended in improving limerick-street. On Monday the subject of the application of Messrs. Paget and Milne was taken into consideration by the same members of the Council os above. It was moved by Cr. Theyers, and carried, That the Town Clerk reply to Mr. Pyke’s letter, and state that this Council have no objections to the lease applied for being granted, provided that they guarantee to deliver at the pit's mouth one ton of coals (fourteen hags) for 20.'. to anyone aoidving for same. Mr. Milne was present when the above resolut ion was read, and stated that the firm were prepared to carry out the terms of the resolution.
