CROMWELL.
(from our own July 20 The annual election for the various Municipal offices have been the source of considerable interest for the last week. Two condidates are in the field for the office of Mayor, Mr. David Booth and Mr. George W. Goodger, and two for each of the vacant seats in the Council, Messrs Fraer and Lindsay contesting for Bridge Ward, and Messrs Shanly and Dagg, for Kawarau Ward , as the voting lor Councillors does nottake place till the 2nd August, tbe interest chiefly hinges on the Mayoral election. Both the gentlemen fighting for that honor have set an example in one respect winch I is worthy of notice—they decline to I personally canvass for supporters l they profess to bow implicitly’ to the • voice of the ratepayers, and it is to ' i hoped that the ratepayers themselves, once the poll is finally declared will accept the cnoice of the majority as if it had been their unanimous wish There can be no doubt that the tide
of Cromwell's affairs is leading on, if not to fortune, at least to a well grounded prosperity, and it would be a pity indeed. If the hands of the fu- . turo Mayor and Council should in any way bo weakened by the keeping up | of petty election grievances If the present spirit only remains with the people, there is no danger of any result like that. Our friends at the Kawarau Gorge do not enjoy the b.essiugs which follow iu the wake of a Mayor and Conn oil, but it appea s they have made up their minds to move right in at least one directum, tin possession of a public reading room and library The Rev Mr. Drake is to give a Lecture on Saturday evening first to initiate the proceedings in .the matter, when we trust there will bo an attendance worthy of the object for which the Lecture is to bo given. Cromwell has been conquered at List; after: tile ;,d! of the uoholers, the people took up the case, and the ha kers laid down heir prices. Bread is now selling at one shilling a oaf (fib ) Beef at ml, and mutton at 3d. per lb. What a happy state ol filings we hove lived fo s-o‘ at last. If a few more things fo low the same example, we sin il soon be able to laugh a John Bri fit’s agitation about a free breakfst table. There is one flagrant example yet remaining, to which a little atten ion might be drawn, the price of milk ami butter’.' We would ad vise daTyiiien to look at the thing honestly before their customers get disc stod—sixpence is just double wind the price f a pint of milk ought to be. •• AU the wo -Id ” is invited to take tea at Cromwell, on Friday evening next at half pis* sis invcis'fy, and all the world of Or unwell is going to attend. I hear thd provision has been made on \ scale of extraordinary laagnitnd" to ceh-hniro the occasion, which is he .iiinivervirv of the Gv'unwell Sabbat !i School. Everything goof (both spiritual and corporal) is to be provided and nothing will be charged. The ladi-s and ilie worthy superintendent of the school have de--1 tennined to make it an unexampled success; their efforts are worthy of trie utmost praise and commend themselves to every right thinking person.
