DUNSTAN DISTRICT HOSPITAL.
Tho monthly meeting of the Committeo of the Duustan District Hospital was held in tho Council Chambers, on Tuesday last, tho Ist inst. Present: Vincent Pyke, Esq., (President,) and Messrs. Hazlett, Griudley, Beck, Fache, Clark, Hueston, Rev, C. S. Ross, Marshall, Ziele, Patterson, A. Christophers, (Hon. Treasurer,) and R. Barlow, (Secretary.) Tho minutes of last monthly and of six special meetings held during the past month were read tvnd confirmed. A letter was read from Mr. Ahern, tho successful tenderer for the erection of a house for the resident surgeon, to the effect that, owing to miscalculations, and tho great rise in cartage from Dunedin, he declined to sign the contract. Received. A letter was read from W. Fraser, Esq., member for the district, stating the Provincial Council ha 1 rcsloved that the sul • sidy to Hospital would, in future bo only £2 to £1 on accounts locally subscribed. Received. A letter from the Government, to the effect that they were not in a position to place a sum on the estimates for refractory ward at the hospital. A letter from Mr. Clayton, the architect, requesting that a cheque bo forwarded him, for fees amounting to seven-and-a-half percent. on'account of accepted tender. Ordered to stand over. A letter from Doctor Shaw, tendering his resignation. Proposed by Mr. Griudley, seconded by Mr. Hazlett, That as Mr. Ahern refuses to sign the contract for the erection of the house-surgeons residence, Mr. Grant’s tender, for £3Bl 10s., be accepted. Carried. The question—Refractory Ward—was ordered to stand over till next monthly meeting. The Visiting Committee’s report No. 1, recommending the fencing of the hospital sesorve, was read and received. Report No. 2, recommending payment of accounts amounting to £217 17s. sd. was read and received. Treasurer's report, showing balance-in-hand i’322 Bs. 7d., and Government subsidy due £SGI 135., was read and receive]. House-surgeon’s report, stating daily average of patients, number discharged and those remaining in tho institution, was read and received. Tho Secretary briefly explained the reason of tendering his resignation, and begged to withdraw it. The sub-committee’s report relative to the management of the Institution was road and received. It recommended that Dr, Shaw’s resignation be accepted, and that immediate steps be taken to appoint his successor.
Proposed by Mr. Hueston, seconded by Mr. Patterson, That the salary of the Resident Surgeon, from and after the Ist of September next, be at the rate of £4OO per annum, and that he be allowed private practice. Carried.
On the proposition of Mr. Patterson it was decided that advertisements should be inserted in the Dunedin and other provincial papers, as also in one nr other of the Sydney and Melbourne papers, inviting applications for the office of llesident Surgeon. Proposed by Mr. Hazlett, seconded by Mr. Clark, That the President, Treasurer, and Mr. Fache be appointed a sub-com-mittee to take such action as may bo necessary to give effect to the foregoing resolution. Carried.
The following tenders for supplies for the ensuing quarter were accepted :—Burials, f 1 10s. each. Bread, J. Hastio, Is. per ■lib. loaf. Groceries, &c., Hazlett—Arrowroot, Is. 2d. peril). ;butter, Is.Cd. ; barley, Id. ; candles, Is. ; cocoa, Is. lOd. ; coffee, Is. sd. ; jams, 13s. per dozen ; mustard, Is. per lb. oatmeal, 3d. ; mazina, lOd. ; pepper, Is. ; 'rice, Id. ; salt, 2d. ; soda, -bb > sugar, Ho. 1, 7d. ; ditto, brown, GDI. ; starch, (id. ; sauces, I7s. per dozen ; soap, 48s. per cwt. ; tea, 2s. sd. per lb. : kerosene, ss. Cd. per gallon ; ale, 17s. per dozen ; porter, Ids. ; brandy, Hennessey’s pale, GOs. per case ; ditto, dark, 225. Cd, per gallon ; rum, 15s. ; whisky, 18s. Cd. ; sherry and port wines, 17s. Meat, IV. Grindley.—Beef, Sd. per lb.; mutton an I lamb, sd.
Proposed by Mr. Hazlett, seconded by Mr. Marshall, That the tender of Charles Holden for milk, lid. per quart, be not oeceptcd. Carried. Messrs. Patterson anl Fache wore elected members of the Visiting Committee, vice Messrs. Clark and Hastie.
Notice of motion by Mr. Christophers.— That he will propose at the j'next meeting that Dr. Shaw be paid his salary during his leave of absence.
T he usual vote of thauks to the Chairman concluded the meeting.
