The Dunstan Times.

FRIDAY, MAY 21, 1869.

Beneath the Rule of Men entirely j itst the pen is mightier than theswoßD

Tiir Province will very soon loose the services of a gentleman, who, fx-om very shortly after the first of the gold discoveries has taken an active and prominent part in its public affairs, we allude to Mr. Julius Yogel, who is leaving for Auckland to undertake there the Elitorship of the Southern

Cross newspaper, the leading journal of that Province. With journalism in Otago, Mr. Yogel was one of its foremost members and to whose energy and enterprise the Province is indebted for the present excellence of its newspaper press. Like all men who have stood in the front ranks, Mr Vogel has naturally met with considerable opposition, especially from per sons jealous of his superior ability, and who coveted the position he held, still, we are decidedly of opinion that there has been very little personal animus in the case, his most inveterate opponents having always admired his tact and ability b in the management of public affairs, and]whether as a politician or a journalist, he was always considered a most formidable enemy to do battle with. In goldfields affairs, Mr. Yogel has always taken a deep interest; there are very few men in New Zealand, who has speculated so largely in gold mining, and who we are sorry to say with so little success His experience in these matters must be very great, it must be at least fifteen years ago since he made his debut to a mining community, as the Editor of the Maryborough and Dunolly Advertiser, which newspaper he conducted with considerable ability, and which was always considered a reliable and influential authority on the North Western goldfields pf Victoria. Next,-we find Mr, Yogel,'Edi tor and proprietor of the Inglewood Advertiser in the same Colony;this was at that time' a journal of considerable importance, and represented the interests of a very large and important district, While thus occupied, Mr. Yogel, at]the request of the majority of the leading inhabitants con tested a seat in the Legislative Assembly for Avoca, and would have been returned, had it not been for a most formidable political combination bent upon the return of two members conjointly, (Messrs Grant and Davies) and who made use of the most unscrupulous means to accomplish thenpurpose. Smarting with his defeat, Mr. Yogel repaired to Otago, when he became proprietor of the Daily Times and Witness newspapers. Of the first named journal, he fulfilled the office of Editor, and from a sheet not one half the size of the Dunstan Times, it was enlarged]from time to time under his management till it assumed double its present dimensions, and so firmly was the paper established in the confidence of the public, that it successfully stood its ground against all opposition, and this has been the case ever since, although Mr. Yogel has ceased all connexion with'it for some time past, (considering the altered circumstances of the Province, consequent upon the loss of population by the migration of a large number of the ' mining community to the West Coast it would of course be an act of folly, on the part of the present proprietors of the Daily Times to publish their paper in any other form than the present). In his future career at Auckland, we have no doubt, but that Mr. Yogel will be equally successful, and that his superior talents in the administration of public affairs will also be as highly appreciated. The Dunedin folks do not appear co be willing that Mr Yogel shall leave them without some public recognition of his valuable services to the Province, and we see by the Daily Times, that at a meeting of his friends held a few days since, it was detex--mined to present him with a testimonial in the shape of a suitable address, accompanied with a purse of sovereigns. This is just how it should be, men able and willing to take a part in the affairs of society, and who have impaired their fortunes in doing so, are not to be met with every day, and their loss leaves a void not easily filled up. It may be all very well to say, “ there are as good fish in the sea, a s ever were caught,” but there is a great difficulty in catching them, and when a gentleman, the like of whom we are writing about, has devoted so lax-ge a pox-tion of his time to furthering the interests of society, it is only a graceful act, even if it is not obligatory, to make him some recompense for his self inflicted sacrifices, while at the same time it stimulates others

to go and do likewise. Mr. Vogel will carry away with him the best wishes of the intelligent and thinking portion of the mining community, and we may add, of the Province generally. [Lince 'the above was in type we have received information that Mr. Vogel has already taken his departure from the province.]
