An adjourned meeting of the Hospital Committee to receive report of the sub-committee appointed to enquire into the excessive consumption of several articles during the past month and other matters will be held at the Council Chambers on Monday evening next, at 8 p.m. With regard to the Gold discoveries made in Sutherlandshire, the following is an extract from the report of the Times special Correspondent,— “ It is pretty evident that gold finding at the new diggings is anything but a paying speculation conducted as it is at present; but all the old hands—the professional diggers, if I may so term them—hgve the best opinion of the prospects. Some eight or ton of that c'ass have been there, and they believe that the hills in the course of the barn arc highly auriferous. One digger, who has had much experience, in i ustralia and New Zealand, says that the place very* much resembles Hamilton’s station in the latter colony, aking the Kiklonian hills for the Hogburn, and the burn for the river Taieri. This gentleman and his party have left the Sutherland diggings, to which they had come from a considerable distance After a trial of several days, they are convinced that there is nothing to be made of merely- gathering up the surface deposits; but ] they sav they would he prepared to \ make experiments on a large scale if \ \ they could get some of the hill land for themselves At present the move-1 monts ot experienced diggers are watched by the peasant gold seekers, and directly one of the former lias dug up a basin full of alluvial deposit and carried it to the stream, a dozen or more of the country- rush to that particular digging, believing it to be the I right spot. The Ausatralin diggers : don’t like tills. They say there is no I use in their making experiments for | others’ use ; and those of them who have gone away intend to suspend operations till some rules and regulations shall have been made. It is admitted on all hands that the gold is of excellent quality In color it is like : the Australian gold, and it works up j admirably. It is very clean when merely washed from the sa d. The foreign particles which remain are, the Australian men say, “ emery” and these are easily drawn out of the gold dust by means of a magnet.”
