DUNEDIN
(from our own correspondent.) Tlio last act in the Taieii election was brought to a close on Thursday last. In the after nomination speeches, some of the more popular cries were re-echoed, especially that referring to the Waste Lands administration, after which there was something like a personal encounter between Messrs. Rennie and Maddock, the latter charging the . former with having led him to believe that he did not intend taking part in the contest, beyond assisting in his (Mr. Haddock’s) return. This was denied by Mr. Rennie, who subsequently retired in favor of Mr. Shancl. The show of hands was in favor of Mr. Shand, and his return was confirmed by the poll, which took place on Thursday. To represent Waikouaiti, Mr. George M‘Lean (of Cargills and M'Lean) has been before the electors, it is more than probable lie will bo returned, as lie has been well received throughout the district. There has been a talk of a Waikouaiti journalist coming forward, but he will in all likelihood, retirein favorof such <ni influential opponent. A third political event of some importance, the inauguration of the Otago Political Association, took place during the week. Co-operation on the part of the country districts would do much to forward its object, and I have every reason to suppose that any movement | of this kind by the up-country districts, would be heartily encouraged by the association. Conflicting reports, respecting the Duke’s visit to Otago, have lately got j into circulation, cue of the more re-
cent, which, by the way, comes to us clothed with official authority, is to the effect, that an Admiralty Order has been received shortening the stav in New Zealand, and, that the visit to Otago will not extend beyond four days The date spoken of is the latter end of this month. Should no alt era tion take place in that arrangement, the visit to the interior cannot possibly take place. "
The Volunteer firing for the General Government Prizes, came off at Caversham. on Friday and Saturday last. Ibe Otago men carried off most of the laurels. The prizes were distributed by Mr. C rgill. A Committee Meeting of the Otago Jockey Club took place on Monday last, to receive nominations for four of the races to come off at the meeting to be held during the Duke’s visit. For 4k the Duke of Edinburgh stakes of .£2OO there were th irtecn nominations, among them are: Miss King, Croydon, Skyonian, Glassford’s Beeswing, and Merrvthought. For the Trotting race of 150, six. Hurdle race of £IOO, six, Handy-sides Hindoo among the number, and forth* Tradesmen’s Plate of £lootherearetwenty three, G1 ssford’s Don John, Beeswing, and Merrythought among the crowd.
