DUNSTAN DISTRICT HOSPITAL

The usual monthly meeting of the Committee of the above Institution was held in the Council Chamber on Tuesday evening last, the 6th Inst. Present : Vincent Pyke, Esq., President, and Messrs. Hazlett, ■Zielo, Bock, Hastie, Hueston, Facho, A. Christophers (Treasurer), and 11. Barlow (Secretary).

The minutes of the prvious meeting were read and confirmed.

The inward correspondence, comprising a letter from the Provincial Treasurer, notifying that the sum of £772 us. Gd. subsidy had been forwarded, and several others, were read by the Secretary, and ordered ta "be received.

After discussion of Report No. 1. and hearing evidence of the members of the "Visiting Committee, from which it transpired that the wooden stretchers and grass mattresses now in use were getting very objectionable, it was resolved, That the repot t be adopted, and that tbe Visiting Committee be empowered to purchase the articles recommended anti to have the Alexandra Ward lined throughout with tire-quarter pudi tongued and grooved

boards. Report No. 2 was called for again. Upon comparing the amounts with similar reports of other dates, it appeared that items spirits, &c, meat, milk, ami vegetables were unreasonably high. With a view to arriving at an understanding it was resolved That the report be received, and that a sub-committee, consisting of the President and Messrs. Hazlett and Hastie, bo appointed to inquire into tho matter. The Treasurer’s report, showing a balance cash in hand of £Ol7 7s. 7d., and Government subsidy due £823 4s. 3d., was read and receive . The Resident Surgeon’s report was read, as follows:—Number of patients in tho Hospital ■ t commencement of mouth, four; since received, eleven ; discharged cured or relieved, five ; died, two ; remaining in hospital, eight. The Secretary was instructed to request the Surgeon for the future to state the daily average of patients in the house. Tenders for Surgeon’s residence, as follows, were opened and rea l ; —Petres and Sous, £470 ; Alexaud Fraser, £568; J. U. Cambridge, £575 10s. ; John Alves, £SBO ; Joseph Over, £GO2 10s. ; W. Herne, £OIO ; Peter Gunn, £640. Mr. Hu ston prnposed, That none of the tenders be accepted, and that_the plans qnd specifications be returned to tho architect, Mr. W. 11. Clayton, with a request that* the same he modified to the amount stated in instructions. (This motion lapsed for want of a seconder.) Resolved, on tho motion of Mr Christophers, seconded by Mr. Hazlett, That tho tender of Messrs. Petre and Sons be accepted, subject to such modifications as will bring it within the limit agreed upon at former meeting. Messrs. Marshall and Christophers were appointed a sub-committee, with power to engage professional assistance, to settle on the modifications in plans, and to prepare contract dee ' for Messrs. Petre and Sons to sign, in the event of their failing to sign to return plans to Mr. W. 11. Clayton, the architect, for modification. The Secretary read and laid on the table correspondence respecting tho suspension of the Matron and the resignation of the Wardsinan. A further letter was read from the Wardsman, withdrawing his resigna. tion. The Visiting Committee reported that they had been put to a great deal of annoyance for tho past month or so in being called upon so frequently to hear disputes between the Surgeon and the Wardsraan. It was evident, from the temperament of the two men that these Tsputes must continue, and therefore they would suggest that the resignation of the Wardsinan bo accepted. After consideration, it was resolved, That the resignation of the Wardsinan be accepted. Resolved, That the sub-committee appointed to inquire into the large consumption of certain articles during the mouth, do also make inquiries as to the suspension of the Matron, and report thereon. Mr. Hastie was elected a member of the Visiting Committee, vice Mr. C. P. Beck, retiring. Notice of of motion by Mr. C. Ziole : —That, at the next monthly meeting, he will propose, That Dr. C Shaw, in the event of his returning, be requested to resign. The meeting then adjourned until Monday, the 12th inst., at 8 p.m.
