The chief officer and the saiimaker were washed ashore alive, hut the captain and the crew, consisting of nineteen men, most of v/hom Were shipped in Wellington and a passenger named MTCay were drowned, The chief mate reached town this afternoon. moored tho canoo beside the peach grove when tho enemy opened fire from an ambuscade, and the men hurried back to the canoe. None appear to have been hit by the discharge, but in pushing off, tho man who had tho paddle was loft behind, and those in tho canoo not knowing or unable to manage it were easily overtaken by the rebels. Constable M‘Evoy and another man attempted to swim across, but the former was wounded mid tho latter killed when ascending tho opposite blink. Two other men took shelter in tho bush and escaped. Sergt. Menzies and tho other five men wore either shot from tho banks or tomahawked in tho water. Alenzie’s body alone was recovered. Colonel M ‘Donnell hurried out his division with the greatest possible despatch, and was on the ground in a very few minutes after the men were shot, the enemy firing at him as he advanced.
