London, Dee. ,4th. The October Marseil ci Mail was delivered n London on the 30th November. The Crown Prince and Princess of Prussia have visited the Queen. The Prince and Princess of Wales are at Copenhagen. The Princess Alice of Hesse has been delivered of a son. Owing to the result of the Elections, Mr. Disraeli resigned on the 2nd December. Mr. Gladstone was immediately sent for, •and proceeded to form an administration. Captain Calcraft, the new member for Wareham, has died since the elections. Mr. Gladstone has published a pamphlet entitled, “A Chapter of Autobiography, indicating my change of opinion as to the Irish Church.” A demonstration took place at Cork at the funeral of James' Mountain, awell known Nationalist. Mr Goldwin Smith’s first lecture to the students of Lowell University, United States, was enthusiastically received. Sir Roderic Murchison reports having rel ceive! a letter from Dr. Livingstone, dated December 1807, Ilia return is expected •shortly. Arrangements for the purchase of the
elegraphs by the English Government are in active progress. Numerous meetings of the merchants, manufacturers, and bankers of Belfast, have been hold there to consider the advisability of the purchase by the Government of the iri ih railways. The St. Stephen’s Bank has suspended payment. The second son of the Viceroy of Egypt is expected in London. He intends remaining in this country several years to pursue his English studies. A representative from the Sullan of Zanzibar, who has been accredited to tho Queen has arrived in London. A testimonial is about to be presentcl to General Peel on his retirement from public life. The coffin containing tho remains of the Prince Consort has been moved from its temporary tomb to the granite sarcophagus it the permanent monument. No ceremony took place on the occasion. The Shrewsbury Cup was won by Sir O. Grahames Romping Girl, and the Liverpool Cup by Sir J. Hawley’g The Palmer. The additional mail service to China, commences on the 24th January. Mer Majesty’s Ship Galatea has arrived at Madeira, all well. Dec. 22. The ship Australia, 1010 tons, from Sydney to London, has been lost, 138 miles north of Bahia. The crew, passengers, and pecie were saved, hut the cargo was lost. Judgmeut has been given by the Court of Common Pleas, thatwomen are not entilted to bo on electoral lists. Mr. George Peabody, the American philanthropist, has made another donation of £IOO,OOO to the poor of London. George Francis Train has issued writs against the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland for 100,000$ as damages for false imprisonment. Julia Matthews is creating a great sensation at the Standard Theatre, London, in the Grand Duchess. One song was encored after being repeated three times. A sculler’s race between Kelly and Saddler, for £4OO, was won by Kelly on the Ist December. The members of the new Ministry have been re-elected. The introduction of the Victorian Loan has been deferred. Ihe wool sales close! firm. The opening prices were fully maintained throughout. 50,000 bales have been taken up for export. Colonial securities are unchanged.
