CROMWELL.
(FHOM OUR owy OOJIRESPOKDUKT.) Jan. 20. I ho t; ott self acting punt at Rocky I'oiat -will toon he ready lor tiaflic, the boats to support the platform passed through here on Monday last. This punt will he a great convenience; to the residents at Bendigo Gully
and perfect the communication for wheeled traffic between this and the Lind is. The Crushing machine at Bendigo Gul’y will he ready for operation in about five, weeks. The prospects of the reef are looking first rate. The commonage question has become all but defunct. A considerable amount of funds was raised latelv to send a deputation to Dunedin to press on the Government the urgent want of free pasturage in this district, instead of sendin some intelligent person down, the cattle owners now clamour for their contributions back again. Such irresolute men are not deserving of a commonage, but deserve to experience ad the ences arising from an overstocked toral area. The Tuapeka and district succeeded by perseverance iu securing entensive commonages, and why the Cromwellites do not follow the example of those Districts seems an insolvable mystery. Messrs M'Cormick and Goodall, of Cromwell, paid a visit to the district of the Ilawea Lake last week to inspect the land, and ascertain whether there is any worth buying, if it should be thrown open for sale. They report that there is some of the best land in the Province there, and that the grass is untouched for want of stock. The patented sheep washing process at the Messrs Loughnan’s, Mount Pisa Station, is giving unbounded satisfaction The wool comes beautifully clean, and is worth three pence per pound more than wool washed by the old process.
