The Dunstan Times.

FRIDAY, JANUARY 29, 1869.

Beneath the Rule o£ Men entirely j vst the ten is mightier than the sword.

The Race Meeting which takes place on the 4th and sth proximo will, without doubt, be one of the most successful ever held upon the Dunstan Course, even if it be equalled in any other part of the province. The establishment of the Dunstan district Jockey Club has met with unprecedented success, far more so than its most sanguine supporters anticipated. This measure of success, however, docs not arise from mere chance, but is the result, of great dilligenee and attention to details, accompanied with liberal views on racing subjects by the Committee ot the Club; and thus, from a very small beginning, has arisen quite a powerful organisation for promoting our much-admired national sport, for

such horse-racing has with truth been designated. The great success ob tained by the Dimstan District Jockey Club reminds us very forcibly that, notwithstanding all that has been said to the contrary, Clyde is in reality the key to the Northern Goldfields, for, unless it were so centrally situate, the success met with by the Jockey Club would never have been obtained. Besides being in the very hear t of the goldfields Clyde is also the centre of an extensive squatting district, and, as soon as wo get the lands open for settlement, that of agriculture may also be added. Surrounded with all these natural advantages, we think there can bo no doubt of its future, and, without in any way interfering with the prosperity of its neighbors, Clyde has the opportunity before it of becoming one of the most important inland township in the province of Otago. There remains now one duty we have to perform in respect to the forthcoming races. By a liberal programme of sports we hafe attracted the attention of a large number of persons living at a distance, and who are sure to pay us a visit. It therefore behooves us to bestir ourselves and make every provision, so that nothing be wanted on our parts to provide them with proper entertainment, and so establish at the same time our reputation for hospitality. With this accomplished, there is every reason to believe that the Dimstan District Jockey Club Races will, in future years, be an event looked forward to with by a very large section of our fellow-colonists.
