CROMWELL DISTRICT SCHOOL.
On Monday the 11th inst, a public meeting was held intheSchool House, Cromwell, for the purpose of electing a new School Committee.
Mr. John Marsh having been voted to the chair, the Secretary read the following rejjgrt'of the retiring committee.
Gentlemen, —Your Committee, in resigning the trust imposed upon them by you, which they do before the expiry of the period for which they were elected, at the suggestion of the Secretary of the Educational Board, have to congratulate you on the satisfactory state of the affairs of the school as shown by the following balance sheet. John Preshaw j Aud,tor3On looking at the balance sheet it will be observed that the balance on hand is small, compared with th: balance when your gpmmittee came into office; but it must be borne in mind that while the previous committee left a balance of upwards of £7O they also left outstanding liabilities amounting to over £SO. On the present occasion the liabilities only amount to a few shi lings. In August last an auction bazaar was held, for the benefit of the echoed, the proceeds of which (£39 13s 6d.) form the chief item under head, subscriptions, rent, etc The sum of £2 which appears on both sides of the balance sheet as special Government aid an' special expenditure, was the unexpected balance of the vote for the Teacher’s residence.
On the 28th of December last, a ball was given for the benefit of the school, but, owing to the small attendance, the proceeds will little move than cover the expenses Your Committee urge upon you the necessity of supportingany efforts which may be made to raise funds for current expenses. On taking office your committee found that the most important work they had to perform. beyond raising money for current ’expenses, was to endeavour to get the school reserve fenced The great necessity for this work was repeatedly brought under the notice of the Government, but it was only about a month ago, that your committee were advised that the sum of £65 had been voted for the purpose of fencing the reserve and painting and repairing the school. Seeing that their term of office was so nearly expired, they deemed it advisable to tak 0 no steps in the matter but to leave it to the new committee - During the past year a Committee of three members was appointed to visit and examine the school which they have done on several occasions, and reported themselves well pleased with the manner in which the school was conducted. Since the making up of the balancesheet £25 has been received from the Government, being the first quarter's allowance for this year. On the proposition of Mr. Fracr, a vote of thanks was passed to the retiring Committee for their exertions during the past year. A number of gentlemen having been proposed for the new committee, a ballot was taken, which resulted in the election of Messrs. Whetter, Marsh, Preshaw, Booth, Goodall, Bathgate, Goodger, Fraer, and Wright.
A vote of thanks to the chair terminated the proceedings.
