CROMWELL.

(from a correspondent.) January 5

The old year was drummed out on Thursday evening last by a considerable number of our gay-spirited inhabitants parading the street, until the new new stepped into the old one’s shoes. Songs were sung, and most people that had retired for the night found themselves disturbed, and were called upon to assist in the festivities. The good folks of the Gorge were on New Year’s Day in the highest of spirits. Athletic Sports were given at Mr. Heron’s Hotel; the attendance was wonderfully large, considering that similar sports had only just passed off. The fair sox were in full force, and all very nicely dressed, proving that the District is highly prosperous, Considerable amusement was caused by a little boj, nine years of age, a son of Mr. Goodger of this Town wrestling in the “ Westmoreland Style ” with two boys one after the other of the several ages'of twelve and thirteen. The little fellow lenced for the “ grip ” with as much caution and judgment as ever I have seen exercised by the most wily of Cornish wrestlers.

In a foot race of 15'> yards, the same youthful hero distanced all rivals, one of them five years older than himself. The contract for the formation of the Nevis road has been duly accepted, and we may now hope to see the road soon formed, and the money circulated in the District, that should have long ago been so. The contractor is Mr. Frank Neil, and I am informed that he is a thorough practical man, and exceedingly energetic as well.
